She'd stepped closer to him without realizing she'd done so. The height difference between the two of them was hardly insignificant, but she was not entirely at a disadvantage. She was just tall enough that if she brought her hands up to roughly the level of her face she could smooth them over his chest and pull his robe just a little further open.

He moved silently toward the threshold, the edge of his robe trailing carelessly through the ashy brickwork in front of the fireplace, and paused in the doorway to extend his deformed hand toward her, palm open and inviting.

He lead her up the long, curving spiral staircase connecting the floors of the house to one another, his dusty robe trailing behind him. He swept it out of the way here and there, with a light, practiced flick of the hem, so she would not trip on it. Daylight penetrated the drapes here and there, but never enough to harm him as he passed through. His face was sallow and translucent in the harshly focused light.
