Teja got up, dressed for work, left a bit early to get a tea, then went down and opened the perfume shop.
She liked working mornings; there was something pleasant and soothing about the very early hours of the day. It was mostly gone by 8, very much gone by 9, but it helped her to feel steady and stable and present. She'd anticipated another hot day, wearing a rather revealingly fitted top underneath a short suede skirt, but to her surprise it didn't get up to regular temperatures, and she had to leave her cardigan on over it even after she left the air-conditioned shop.
No one had treated her like a public figure, no one had recognized her, and she could almost pretend that the events of the last few days had never happened.
But as she was approaching the subway entrance, she remembered the night before and froze.
Only a little while, it will only take a little while, hardly any time at all...
Krolock's mansion was a long way out of the way to go to deliver a casual break-up, but then that was assuming it would be casual. If Herbert was to be trusted, which was not at all a given, Krolock would not make it extremely easy, though she didn't expect him to make it hard either. She was herself already beginning to have regrets, though. She'd enjoyed his company so much these days. He had been closer to her than anyone else had been. But, as she took the train in his direction, she considered that was largely why she had to do this. She had been pushing her attraction to him aside, but that was impossible to continue doing. She had to accept that it was there and posed a threat, certainly now that she knew it existed on his side as well.
She carefully arranged her hair on his doorstep for several minutes, trying to get her bearings, before lifting her hand to knock on the door, and losing her balance when instead it was pulled inward at that moment.
