It had felt weirdly nostalgic for a moment, underneath the layers of confusion and discomfort. She'd had her school friends play with her hair when she was a very little girl. But no, she had Loki for that; when they were quite exhausted or apathetic and curled up together he could go for hours without saying a word to her, fingers in her hair soothingly.
"Herbert, I don't care if you think I'm pretty or not," she said kindly.

"Are you going to the gala?" he blurted.

"What?"

"At the museum- it's only a few days away, you know. We'll all be there- the three of us, I mean. That's not much of an all, though, is it?"

"You, your father, and Alex?"

"…and Sarah," he admitted.

"If it's a gala, that means tickets, doesn't it?" she asked, chewing on her lip.

"Well," Herbert said slowly, "we could say you were part of our party-"

"Loki could get me into anywhere," she conceded, without realizing this was probably going to read as an offer to tag along.

"So you are coming?"

She gave him the flattest look.
"I didn't say we were."

"Well," Herbert said, "you ought to, you poor thing. You're always cooped up behind that counter all day-"

"You have no idea how often i work at the perfume counter," she said, though the insinuation stung.

"And it'll be fun," he said, widening his eyes a little. "I don't think Vati's going to be throwing a ball this year. They're just not safe out here. I've been asking and asking and asking, but he's so dull, Teja-"

"...oh. You're only asking because you want to go."
Suddenly the whole thing made sense. Herbert genuinely thought his father was attracted to her, and thought that if she was going to this gala, Johannes would want to go, too - and Herbert would get to come along.
"I'm really not sure your father would care if I go, Herbert."
