She repressed the urge to roll her eyes. Herbert playing matchmaker and being fanciful and romantic was less irritating than a great number of things, but somehow it was more frustrating than them. She was beginning to understand why Loki was so fixated on disliking Herbert; he made an attractive sinkhole for the irritations one couldn't express at other facets of life. "Herbert, your father and I just met, and we are friends, I hope, but that is all."

"Oh," said Herbert. "Oh-oh dear. Well, I should hate to rush anything- or force it- and I certainly respect your feelings on the matter, but… I don't think Vati quite sees things that way."

"Your father's too old to become infatuated with a girl he just met."

"Oh, that's what I thought too, dear- it's all really very shocking!"

Now her brow puzzled.
It was possible, of course, that Herbert was misreading - willfully or otherwise - even making things up entirely. But why would he? She remembered Sarah and him interacting but could not see anything especially hateful between them. And she remembered Krolock from earlier. He had clearly worked on giving her the impression he liked her, speaking about her youth and the joy of her company, smiling at her often. But it had felt insincere to her, as the son did now.
She remembered her misleading Loki out of spite into believing they might be romantically involved in some way with a faint blush that she did not intend for Herbert to see, but could not conceal nonetheless.

"It's rather adorable. He's so proud most of the time, but you've rather undermined all of that. Do you know what he did last night, dear? He came to me asking if I knew anything about what you like and dislike."
His smile took on a bit of a leering quality as the blush spread over her cheeks.
"Of course, I don't know you half as well as I should like, so I was rather flummoxed, to tell you the truth-"

The blush became an angry flush as soon as she picked up on the subtle change in Herbert's expression. She felt dirty, watching him watch her.
"Herbert, none of this concerns me. Your father is kind, I'm sure, but that doesn't mean-"

"The last time he did this was with Sarah," Herbert said in a hushed voice.

"That's worked out wonderfully."

"Seventy years isn't so bad," Herbert conceded. "And Sarah's bored anyway. Between you and me, that's half the reason I'm here."
He nodded sagely.

She winced, shaking her head in confusion.
"You want me to get together with your father because you- don't want him and Sarah together anymore? Because they're bored?"
They'd been making out at the opera rather enthusiastically. She felt terribly unconvinced of all this suddenly, and thought he was making a fool of her - likely Krolock wanted to seduce her or something and Sarah didn't care and could even be in on it, and afterwards - no, she was letting her memories of the opera color her perception.

"Wwwwell," said Herbert, in an overly-steadied voice, "it's rather more complicated than that. You see, dear… I do care about them quite deeply, but they're so often at odds. I really just want them both happy, you see?"

"Herbert," she said, with the sweet patience of a kindergarten teacher, "I know you think if only something new would happen to force them to make the decisions you've felt they should make for a while now, they would make them and be happy, but I am a person, not a bandaid. I can't fix the problems your father has with his girlfriend, and him leaving her for me would probably not make either of them happy."

"Well, try telling him that," Herbert huffed. "He was asking me about clothes."
