Teja woke up in an empty bed.
Of course, this didn't surprise her unduly; Loki not infrequently got up before her. Sometimes he liked to fix or order breakfast and then call her in for coffee. She expected something like that. A kiss on the forehead and an urgently cheery, "Get up, sweetling, there's cofee!"
It didn't come, though, and when she sat up and rubbed her hair into decent place, she realized disturbingly that the apartment seemed empty of sound.
She rushed into the next room in some alarm.
"Loki?"
She was being silly, she thought... and then when he didn't answer, her sense of embarrassment with herself began to turn into fear.
She went back into her room and got her phone, hitting over to the most recent conversations she'd had and pressing the call button. But then Loki's ringtone could be heard on the opposite side of the room, his phone plugged in and resting on a tabletop. She ended the call and rushed out with some hurry.
There on the fridge in large, pointy lettering was a plainly put letter about Loki being gone 'for some days', having matters to attend to, 'but not Fandral'. He'd see her soon, he said. Soon! After some days??
Whether this was about Fandral or not...
Teja crumpled. It wasn't fair that he would do this, after yesterday being so stressful, when they'd made up....
She went to take a shower, and probably cry in it.

Herbert hadn't finished dressing when the doorbell chimed.
His shoulders tensed. When he didn't hear anyone else's footsteps padding down the long marble staircase, he gave a forceful eye roll and groaned.
"Oh, I see how it is," he called to no one in particular. "I'm to do everything around here, is that right?"
He finished pulling on his trousers- they were halfway up, after all, pushed the mass of his hair back over his shoulder, and made his petulant, thumping way downstairs, shielding his face as he opened the door.
"Helloooooh, it's you!"
Herbert reached out to hurry her inside. The poor girl's eyes were pink and puffy, and she looked miserable.
"My dear, what has happened?"

She was furious that she looked as upset as she felt, as she had tried to mask the shower crying with very nice and waterproof cosmetics, but there was no point in taking it out on poor Herbert.
Seeing the effect the boy's mental decline had had on his father, even though his father had taken such very good care of him for all this time, had melted a lot of her own reserves. He no longer scared her, despite his enormity, and she had chosen to chide him in future if he ever put the moves on her husband-to-be again.
"It's a really long story- um, thanks," she said, as she was ushered inside. It was unbelievably dark in their house, as usual. She stood blinking like an owl trying to sort out her eyesight.

Herbert automatically reached for her coat and then recalled that between her being human and it being summer outside, she didn't have one. He made an externally-inexplicable noise in amusement at his own foolishness.
"Come, come, sit down-"
He didn't really let her come find her own place, however, so much as he just sort of scooted her along into the sitting room to the side.
"I have all the time you need. Go on."
He thumped down opposite her, one leg crossed over the other, fingers knitted together over his uplifted knee and an attentively mild expression on his face.

She was faintly surprised and a little uncomfortable. She had come to speak to his father, but she was stricken with anxiety at the obvious assumption and couldn't get the words out, or even know how to word it.
"That's very kind of you, Herbert."
Um.

Herbert leapt up and scurried into the kitchen.
"So what brings you here, dear?" he called.

Weakly, she began, "Well, Loki's not at home, so I thought I'd drop by and see your father..."

Herbert hung around the threshold.
"My father?"

"Yes," she said with the utmost contriteness.

"Are you two- goodness," said Herbert, in the most innocent tone imaginable. "I don't think anyone's come to see my father in- in decades, dear."

"I'm very sorry - he's not asleep, is he? I really don't mean to be a bother-"
