Teja did not pick up on the obvious point Herbert was trying to make.
"He's one of their palace warriors or something."
She was messing with her hair.

"Oh. Oh, of course."
Herbert made a long, high-pitched groaning noise, pressing his lips together, as he bent to clean up the tea he'd dropped.

"They knew each other as adolescents... " She realized she was falling into her habit of giving away more information than she should, felt ashamed, and went silent. She was sure it was good tea, but she didn't really like tea without sugar and cream. "I haven't met him yet - they're all staying with the brother, you know - you used to live there. I'm sure Megan will have a crisis when she comes home to find four more Asgardians at her house."

"Who's Megan," Herbert said flatly, in a tone that suggested he could care less. "You poor creature, though! I can't imagine- and you're so pretty, too, it's a shame-"

"Herbert, we made up," she reminded him.

"Oh, I know that," said Herbert, with a note of hysteria creeping into the edge of his voice, "but still- I haven't quarrelled with a lover in years. I've nearly forgotten what it was like."

She was starting to feel very nervous. What if she'd set something off? She didn't know how Herbert worked. About his boundaries or something. She knew it was terrible to be afraid of another mentally ill person, but Herbert was a hundred year old vampire and she was not equipped to deal with her own problems, let alone those of a stranger.
"I already talked about this with your father yesterday, it was before we met up."

"I knew it," Herbert muttered, aggressively pouring himself another cup of tea and drinking it in a fashion most people reserved for alcohol.

"- excuse me?"

"Oh, nothing, nothing, just air and noise and silliness," Herbert said briskly. "I do love having company again. We didn't for so long, except, hmm, once a year? Yes, once a year. And now we've got new faces popping in and out of here all the time."
He had a very low voice- deeper than his father's- but the sort of swooping tone he took on made it hard to tell at first. They looked more similar than they seemed at first glance, for that matter; it was mostly Herbert's generally fairer coloring and hyperactive facial expressions that made the difference.

She tensed.
"You mean the balls. I'm not that kind of company-"

"And good thing, too," said Herbert. "Do you have any idea how dull it is, spending three hundred and sixty-four days and nights a year all shuttered up and not getting to talk to anyone? Between you and me, dear, the balls were hardly a relief. Never any socializing to be had there."

"No complaining, or struggling..."
