"We're going to go inside," he panted, "and then go home-"

She nodded hurriedly.

Loki picked her up and magically forced the airlock open just in time for him to run inside. It shut behind them, and he set Teja down on the floor.
"...don't look outside," he said, glancing that direction himself.

Teja sat with her knees to the side, looking like a casually tossed-away doll, albeit one with brown streaks of eyeshadow on her cheeks, pale and shaky and queasy.

Loki leaned down to scoop her up.
"Come along," he said, as though she were walking with him and not nestled in his arms.
After a few moments of silent progress down the corridor that lead to the airlock, Loki suddenly stopped.
There was a faint but unmistakeable tinge of the stink of death and decay, of rotting meat, in the cold, stale air.

Teja pushed as far from him as possible and threw up spittle and bile onto the floor.

"Another corpse, most likely," he said, gingerly setting her down.

"Three of the men outside were in Veidt's livery," Loki said. "Four more were dressed like your guards tend to dress in this world. Poison, I'd wager."

"They had champagne glasses..." She suddenly recoiled reflexively. "People make toasts on New Years!"
Why kill his own men, though? And why didn't anyone know or care that they were dead? The thought that some people were so insignificant they could die in the snow and go unnoticed for six weeks was painfully depressing.

"Smells like Jotunheim too," Loki muttered, following the odor into what looked like some kind of small healing room.
A moment later, he called back:
"Ah, here's the source of the trouble!"
He leaned out.
"There's human meat in the wastebin."

Teja tried to talk in his direction, and tripped. Her body wasn't working right.

Loki swooped forward to catch her, unnaturally fast and blurring around the edges.
"...his hand," he said slowly. "I think it's what was left of his hand. Not much left, though."
