((I love that Manderley's description reads "beware time warp and epic angst" and welp yes timewarp galore))
Kat stood in the yard by the stables, in a comfortable riding costume of simple dark blue wool. As fun as they were, the hats that seemed to be so in fashion in the 16th century seemed a little impractical to Kat. She hadn't been riding at Manderley for a few years now, and she wanted full maneuverability for the ride. It was early, and she hoped to be undisturbed... or did she?
It wasn't her fault she'd said quite loudly in front of Henry's staff that she was headed out.
She saddled her own horse, yanking at the leather and testing the tightness. She'd chosen a horse her cousins had told her was spirited without disobedience, which she thought would be good. Gloves pulled on, she adjusted the bridle and patted the horse's neck.

((Well, see, we can say that it's not lying!))
Well, of course he slipped out of the house surreptitiously, ditching his usual hangers-on and sycophants. Let it not be said that an opportunity was allowed to pass him by without him giving some thought to it at the least. Though when it came to someone like Kat, there was usually only one option.
"I don't suppose you'd allow some company?" He said, already all set to take of riding, the reins of his glossy black warhorse in his hand.

((Oh 'verse, never change))
She was not surprised to see him and didn't feign so either, so she spared a curtsey, quick but not rushed, as soon as he came in sight. "And if I said no?" she teased. "What would your response be, your Majesty?"

Her response was met with a half-smile.
"Well, my lady, I would say I would go on my way, and perhaps run into you out in the countryside."

"And if I ran?" She challenged further, heading to the other side of the horse. "Would you command me return?"
She pulled herself onto her mount and began settling in. No sidesaddle for her, though she was quite proficient in the art--sidesaddle was a whole other kind of challenge, and not one she wanted to deal with today. Her skirt was cut so that it wouldn't be a scandal. She met his gaze with a sly smile.
((HA HA HA FORESHADOWING))

(( ;D ))
Henry grinned as he mounted the great black stallion.
"I'd say I'd have to give chase."

She couldn't resist a smirk. "Then give chase," she suggested, and urged her horse off in the direction of the woods. The creature was nimble and responsive, and Kat had a lead in a few seconds.
((This doesn't have to be hours of chasing, they can meet up like 50 yards into the woods and laugh about it or something. KAT IS JUST KIND OF A TEASE.))

Ah, so that's how it would be. Not that a chase was any sort of problem for him. Henry took off after her, the warhorse's huge strides eating up the space between them.

When he was obviously starting to catch up, she slowed to a trot and then a walk. "You've brought a war-horse for a pleasure ride," she laughed. "Doesn't he feel insulted?"

Henry affectionately patted the horse's neck as he slowed.
"Oh, he doesn't mind a good run. It keeps him from getting antsy from being cooped up in the stables."

"He's a magnificent horse... I commend your choice," she teased. From someone who'd grown up around horses, it was quite a compliment. "And his name? Surely he has an equally impressive name."

"Your Majesty is familiar with Greek, then?" It was only to be expected--Greek and Latin were the standard of education at the time, right? "I'm afraid 'Nellie' just doesn't have a second meaning."

"Familiar with it and Latin, yes." He said, as though it were nothing.
"And, how do you know there's nothing more to Nellie? Perhaps it has a hidden meaning." He teased.

"Well, I was ten when I named her, so I'm fairly certain," she laughed.
They had made it to a trail through the woods, sometimes-overgrown and ceilinged with greenery. It was good to be back in England--at least on a fine day like this one. "I thought we'd head through the woods and over to the cliffs overlooking the harbor--does that sound alright?"
