It was late morning and not much was happening. Breakfast had already been had and since it was overcast and cold, all the girls were either reading or sewing quietly inside. The halls in the southern wing were empty except two maids who were talking and walking down the corridor. They were quite engrossed in their little conversation of gossip and rumours when--
"Excuse me!"
--They were brusquely interrupted by a flash of blonde curls whizzing past them.
With a letter in her hand, Lucrezia ran as fast as she could down the entire length of the wing and burst into their room.
"Kat!" she said excitedly before nearly tackling her with her embrace. "You're not going to believe it!"

Kat reeled, knocked by the force of Lucrezia's enthusiasm.
"... the... Portuguese are invading? You've ordered a new dress?"

Lucrezia sobered for a second; the change was rather comical. "They better not. Wouldn't that be stupid!"
But then she went right back to her giddy self. "Cesare's coming!" she said, showing her the letter he had sent her. "He's going to be here soon! Maybe even in a few days!"
She took Kat's hand and twirled herself. Her blue eyes were wide with excitement, her cheeks were flushed and her hair was a little messy from the running.

Kat smiled. She was happy for Lucrezia, of whom she'd grown... quite fond in the last few months.
"Oh, that's wonderful, then!" She laughed. "You never shut up about him; now I'll finally get to see for myself."

"Yes! And I'm sure you two will get along like old friends," she said, plopping down in the bed. "Ohh, it's been months. We've never been away from each other for this long. Ever."
Lucrezia patted a place on the bed next to her, asking her to sit down.

"I hope so for your sake," she said, sitting down. "Does he look much like you?" Just out of curiosity.

She thought for a moment. "I dunno... But he's quite horribly handsome: square jaw, strong chin and he has very kind eyes."

"Complete with Italian charm and women falling all over him?" She teased.

Lucrezia laughed.
"To deny that would be a lie," she said coyly.
She suddenly took both of Kat's hands and looked very, very serious.
"Kat, you must promise me one thing," she said dramatically.

"Yes?"

"You must promise me that no matter what, under no circumstances, no matter what happens, even if we are engulfed by the sea, that you won't..."
It was so ridiculous that she had to pause to try and stay in character. As if Kat would need a reminder! She was much too level-headed for...
"Fall in love with him--"
And with that she gave her friend a big kiss on the cheek, leaped up and skipped out of the room.

"Lucrezia Borgia you get back here--"
Kat leapt up and scrambled after her, laughing.

**NEW DAY, EARLY MORNING**
Morning sunlight streamed in through the windows, making the airy drapings and bedcothes glow with the patterns from the windowpanes.
Kat was plaiting Lucrezia's long, white-golden hair, in order to style it into something pretty for the day. Lucrezia's hair was lovely all on its own, but Kat loved to play with it and a styling could make her look a little more grown-up and sophisticated.
"Papa claims he tripped over a stone and discovered the tomb by nearly falling into it, but Auntie Ellie insists the diggers had already found the entrance and he just wasn't looking where he was going after he stole the hat Grandfather had given her..."

Lucrezia was sitting on the bed with her legs crossed. She listened to Kat's stories as she went through her box of headdresses. She was currently trying to decide between the gold net one with pearls or the one that looked like something off of a Grecian statue.
"Who do you believe?" she asked with a giggle.

"I could never decide. At some point I need to ask Nana--I get the feeling it's a combination of the two," Kat said with a smile.
"Ooh, I like that one," she said, pointing to the grecian-themed one. "I can curl your hair up top and we'll braid it in."
She worked on getting the majority of hair out of the way, to work with later.
"That reminds me, remember that little house we saw, the one with the rose garden that I said reminded me of Nana's house? They've put it up to let. The family made some investments that they want to oversee in the South."
Kat had long harbored the idea of renting her own house nearby, preferably on the river for easy transport back and forth to court, and a small, grey-stone building that looked like a small version of the older parts of Manderley. Of course, to someone of the court, it looked only a few decades old.
