With a nod, Lucrezia put the pearled back in her box and put it aside.
"Oh, Catalina, we should rent it! Imagine all the little parties we could have-- oh! And we could decorate it with beautiful things," she said, her mind already reeling from all the possibilities.

"Yes! And we could take a poleboat back to the palace whenever we liked, and invite only exactly which guests we wanted, and generally be very romantic..." it was seldom that Kat gushed, but this was her pet idea, and she was terribly pleased that Lucrezia liked it. "I'd have to ask Nana for the rent money, but I'm sure she'll say yes; she's bohemian that way. She was a composer, you know, before she married Grandfather."

"And I could ask Mama for a little more allowance," she said after a moment of thought. "How nice would it be to surround ourselves with life and color! No more piccioni e corvi, no?"

Kat laughed. "Only robins and bluebirds... or perhaps peacocks, if we wish them! I'll have Nana send over a few horses, or..."
An idea struck. "Or maybe we could visit Manderley ourselves! Nana's got most of it closed up; we could pick out furniture and decorations and horses and dogs and--" Kat stopped herself. "Getting ahead of myself! But Nana does have the loveliest things, and she hates that she has so much and nobody enjoys any of it anymore."
Kat kept in contact with her grandmother through letters, and had wanted to visit for a while. "Oh, you'd love Manderley. For all this court is dark and heavy, Manderley is all soaring ceilings and beautiful decorations and endless gardens and seacoast! At least during the summer."

"We'll have a little menagerie of all the animals we like," she said, loving the idea more and more. "And we must get a seahorse. I love seahorses. A little aquarium with a whole family of them!"
The way Kat talked about Manderley, it seemed like the kind of place you just didn't want to leave. When she mentioned going, Lucrezia gasped.
"I would love to visit Manderley. Maybe it's as beautiful as Papa's vineyard in Valencia."

Cesare was going to come get the ladies for breakfast when he heard the sound of female giggles and gossip. Sometimes you couldn't help but listen in on a conversation you weren't meant to hear--you learned things you couldn't possibly otherwise.

"I've always wanted to visit Spain... anyway, yes, we could visit Manderley, and you could meet my Nana, and then we'd have all our things shipped back so we could decorate the house with them, and it would be positively stunning and everyone will beg for invitations to our parties and we will be positively so charming and bohemian that everyone will just want to be us," she said grandly, looping a braid into Lucrezia's hair and grinning at her in the mirror.

"Yes, everyone will be so jealous of how perfect and pretty everything will be! We should also have little musical parties where we sing and play the lute and put on plays that we've written."
Then Lucrezia had a more brilliant idea.
"You take me to Manderley and I'll take you to our vineyard," she said proudly. "We spend a few months out of the Summer each year there. It's a beautiful place with the best wine and food and the people are so friendly and I'm sure you'd absolutely love it!"

"My Spanish is horrific," Kat joked. "You'll have to make sure I don't grievously offend anyone when I ask where the privy is."

Lucrezia laughed.
"I'm sure they'd understand," she reassured her. "And when in doubt, you can just speak Italian and they'd understand. They've all gotten used to all four of us children speaking Italish!"

"Just wait, I'll be talking about frogs with tailcoats or something when I'm trying to find the kitchen."
Kat started braiding pieces of Lucrezia's hair, draping and intertwining the braids around the hairpiece.
"We can go see it today, if you like."

Cesare silently listened to their laughs and giggles from outside their door. The way they were talking, it reminded him of when they were children and how they used to sit in each others' beds and plan fantastical trips to far away lands. At first, there was a pang of jealousy. Lucrezia had never had many friends outside the family and the few she had were never very close. But here she was in a foreign land, away from family, away from him... Lucrezia had bonded with a stranger.
Clenching his jaw, he knocked on their door louder than he had realized.

"Come in!" Kat called over her shoulder, putting the finishing touches on Lucrezia's hair. "There, terribly grown up."

Lucrezia beamed and hopped off her bed.
"Do I really look grown up, Cesare?" she asked, turning once so he could see.

His initial bad mood dissipated when he saw his sister happy and smiling.
"Indeed, sister," he said lovingly as he took her hand. "You'd put Venus herself to shame."
"Come, breakfast is ready."
His only acknowledgment of Kat was a brief glance before he lead Lucrezia out of the room.
