Something was wrong.
Erik always knew when something was wrong, for it was his opera, and while he may not have described it quite like this the tremors of doings up above reached him wherever he was. It may well have been that he subconsciously picked up on very subtle clues on his rounds.
One such, perhaps, was the darkening of the skies at midday.
He didn't notice at first, not consciously, because he often forgot what time it was, or did not care. But while prowling through the managers' office, to see if there were any new egregious wrongs being done him, he thought to look out the window and saw armies of... something... amassed in the Place de l'Opera.
The sight sent him to the roof, where he could observe unseen, and he was disgruntled by the sight. He did not want any bloody wars upsetting his family or his plans.

Had Azula been able to read the surprised displeasure in Midna's thoughts at the fact a handful of her soldier's had *died*, she would have cackled outloud. As it was she was amused by the peculuar, half-naked style of armor the tall, blue woman was wearing. The fallen princess dusted off one bracer after sticking her remaining knife in her belt.
"Isn't it obvious?" she quiped, laughter infecting her tone and manner poised with long-learned charm that seemed all out of synch with the conditions of the battlefield, "We're the first line of resistence that will stop this unatural little invasion from bearing fruit for Midna and her ally, the fallen tyrant Richard."
She smiled, breathing slow and deeply, "...Would that be you two? *He* certainly seems to have the aragonce of a king if nothing else."

Looking at her, Midna could tell that she was going to hate Azula immediately. There was something about her, an aura, almost, that reminded her of Zant; that was not something one wanted to do around her. Surrounding her other hand with crackling negative energy, strengthened by the Twilight around her, levelling her sword.
"Oh, it's obvious. I merely asked to be polite, before you both get put down," Midna snarked right back, never losing her acidic tongue; she was the opposite--basically good, but remarkably short on charm.
"How very astute of you. Pity you couldn't use it for something more fruitful."

Richard, for his part, hated and distrusted all dark powers not put at his own disposal. So he was ill-disposed towards this fire-woman, and her words did nothing to recommend her to him.
"I have every part that maketh a king," he called to her. "And what have you? Some parlour tricks, I think. And arrogance concealing nothing. If you remain, wench, you will find what makes a king, and be none the better for it!"

Azula's eyes narrowed slightly at Richard's barb, slipping into a Firebending stance, left hand held palm up and fingers extended at Midna. "Ah. Long as we're being formal, I might as well explain that the blood of a dozen rulers of *my* country runs through *my* veins, that *I* almost won it's throne through *my* own power, and that after a year reflecting on my defeat, I've grown to accept that I shouldn't try to grasp power that *I* can't hold onto," the fallen princess shot back, "A pity you didn't learn that lesson. It might have spared you finding out what almost makes a Firelord."
Agni take it; where was Micaela with the sun? She couldn't enter an Agni Kai with a 'shadowbender' under these conditions for too long... Still apperances were everything. And Azula was very good at apperances.
She smiled at Billy sidelong, finishing cheerfully, "So. Is this going to be a duel between the four of us, or are you going to add more kindling to my fire?"

Richard rolled his eyes at that. The tauntings of a popinjay, a charlatan. He had Midna's army behind him (well, in front of him, really) and a mere girl was hardly going to defeat that.

Realizing that he was the only non-royal among the group, Billy had a fleeting thought that he should probably run--but he also realized that the other two were trying to take over France. That was HIS job, damn it! He was the one who wanted to fix the world, and invading an unprepared country did NOT qualify as fixing the world! Thank god Mom and Dad are tall--I can do this! He drew himself up to his full six feet and glared at the opposing two, aiming his Death Ray for another shot. "I may not be royal," he told them, using the baritone that his voice instructor had told him to practice as well as his evil laugh, "But I'm a doctor, and I know exactly how this will kill you." To prove his point he shot a random soldier to the left of the (enemy) princess, who shrieked and collapsed as the bolt of red energy stopped his heart. ((For the record, he currently looks like this.))

He should run. Indeed he should. Midna could simply not believe her luck--or rather, the lack thereof. Why had everything suddenly turned into one long string of disasters? As she pondered this, it made her even angrier, and her eyes flashed as the villainous fellow (what a strange outfit!) "drew himself up" to a height which precisely failed to intimidate the tall Twili woman.
Midna's eye twitched at the death of yet another soldier, but she fought to keep the snarkiness in her voice. Bad things happened when she started raging. "So, you're a doctor, are you? Well, I do hope you know about the effects of Twilight on humans. Either way, that...device won't harm me, so...I hope you're prepared to fight!" With that, she abruptly pressed her hands together, and shot a projectile of black and red energy in the bad doctor's direction.
Ugh, she was talking like someone in a kid's story, but at least it might be intimidating.

(Ready! Fight!)
Azula flowed into instant motion at Midna's attack firing off a bolt of bright blue flame that intercepted and canceled out Midna's projectile in a crackle of opposing energies.
"Sorry. But let's leave the men to settle among themselves, right? Only fair," the fallen princess quiped, punching off two more bolts of flame at Midna's form. Heh. Not an ideal situation, but she'd cope somehow. Plus there was the presense of Micaela that Midna hopefully knew nothing about.

Though Midna hadn't been expecting it, she wasn't technically surprised when the two charges burst against each other. It seemed only logical that fire should be powered by heat and warmth, as of the sun.
"Tsk. Humans always are the overprotective sort, aren't they?" Midna responded with a sarcastic, mocking sigh. "But, if you're ready to lose, then bring it!" With one fluid motion she tossed her hood back, letting her own flame-orange hair spill down her back, and brought up her sword, sheathed in dark energy, to let the flame bolts spark against.
Of course, she had other powers than this--in a moment she smirked and became a haze of black particles, which rushed forward until suddenly she was right there, stabbing out at the other princess. That was exhausting to do, but the element of surprise made it worth it.

Having fought an opponent whose favorite attack was precisely a wave of directed wind, Azula tumbled backwards and sideways from the flicker. The reaction save her from a direct hit, the blade sheering through the top of her dammaged left shoulder guard in a sparking of unholy energies. Okay. Avoid the sword...
"Call it loyalty to a benefactor instead," she countered as she swept the ground with a wave of flame that would hopefully cook Midna's ankles and shins out from under her, "Something you probably don't understand."

Gritting her teeth, Midna noted the Firebender's dodge; she was good, there was no doubt about that. But the Twili would be better, and avoid getting roasted as well.
Recoiling at the first sight of a flame, Midna still managed to have the lower half of her somewhat ephemeral gown burnt off, and winced in pain at the heat on her greaves. That tore it. What stung more, though, was the gibe. "At least I helped save them in the end!" she snarled back, bringing her blade up in a slashing arc to launch several balls of shadow at Azula. "Something you won't have the chance to do!"

Richard ignored the women's banter--he knew, of course, that Midna had other powers though it was disconcerting to see them used--and advanced on the boy, who stood stupidly unprotected through it all as the Twili armies spread. His sword drawn, his limp unpronounced through good health and long practice, he was before the snively-looking man in moments.
"And what use has she for you, knave?" he asked bluntly. "What has she promised you, to stand agape at her side?"

"Saaaays you," taunted the fallen princess, too absorbed in her duel to pay attention to Billy and Richard, using the exhale to power a swath of blue flame with a wave of one hand. The shadow balls hit and disapated large chunks of the swath as they self-destructed. Enough was left over for Azula to think it worth the cost of punching her other hand out to boot the flame Midna's direction, "Then why are you playing the villain here by invading a city that clearly doesn't want your man?"
The sloppy, pinwheeling fireball flew for the Twili's torso, Azula falling back to take up a proper stance as her golden eyes sought out the result of her shot, much as it had drained her. Agni... At least she had taken out part of the other woman's ridiculous combat outfit.

This was quickly getting irritating, and Midna wanted to end it quickly. Her particolored eyes narrowed at the sight of the other, larger fireball she'd spread out, and though she didn't think she was in any real danger--at least, not immediately--she did not want more of her expensive clothing destroyed. Oh, and there was the matter of that taunt.
"First off, I know how stupid invasions can be. However, I thought it would be better to see the monarchy here restored to power. Leaders know better than the people together. Secondly...don't EVER imply anything about me again!" she snarled, risking a daring move by lowering her sword, still crackling, and charging through the flames, wrapped in an aura of darkness.
