"Ve neet to keep your larynx low, ent the best vay is to let it get comfortable. It makes the higher notes sount better." Perhaps this was why his falsetto was so breathy--lack of focus.
Also, she suspected he had been neglecting a perfectly good tenor sound in there.

Kurt made a bit of a face, but tried again. God, he was so patient.

"Better." She began moving the scales up, stopping probably somewhere in the middle of his range. Still not where he wanted to be.
"Now you neet to concentrate on focusing the sount. You're letting air escape. I focus right behind the teeth. It might help if you add a consonant sount like 'v' or 'l'."

"Ma'am, this is uncomfortable." His tone was terse, but he tried again, again. A little better but not much. Was this what she wanted

She sighed. Perhaps if they practiced where he was more comfortable, they could get lower later.
She moved up the keys into where he seemed to think he sounded best. "Now try focusing the sount." Opening up the larynx had helped--some. She worried he'd fall right back into his habits up in that range.

Much better. It was easier to do what she wanted if she wasn't bullying him lower and lower.

The boy bristled, but powered onward. What did that even mean?

**NEW DAY**
Whatever, if the boy was going to insist he was a countertenor, she'd at least make his falsetto sound good. It was his falsetto. Not his voice. Delusions. Completely delusional little bescarfed tenor.
She'd prepared some Mozart for him.

But his scarfs are so charming!
Kurt clutched the sheet music in his soft, well-manicured hands.
"How... classical." His smile was rather stiff, but genuine. "But it's not really my kind of thing."

Sigh. "Well, all right then, I didn't say I wouldn't do it--"
Even as he recognized the piece, his eyes were starting to glaze over.

"No," he spat defensively, "I just said it wasn't my thing. Shall I warm up?"

**YET ANOTHER DAY**
Ana shuffled the music on the stand, preparing for Kurt's arrival. She'c convinced him to work a few classical pieces into his repertoire, if only for strengthening the voice beneath. He still refused to dip down into that rich tenor sound, but she couldn't win all her battles. One day he'd stop being seventeen and realize that there were very few roles of the type he wanted--he could either suck it up and train as a tenor, keeping that unique sound on reserve, or wind up out of work.
If nothing else, she could tell that he did want this. He was just too young to take advice, in her opinion. Which was infuriating.
