"I've hardly been that," he admitted, reaching to stroke Adrien's cheek.

"I should have known." he said, darting out of his way on unsteady feet, voice starting low and then rising slowly. "I should have guessed, somehow - you're not the first murderer I've loved, so I should have guessed!"

"Adrien, if you just listened to me-"

"Fine," he shouted. "Use your big words, justify it to me!"

Adrian leaned down to look him in the eye.
"Adrien, I am putting an end to war as we know it. After tonight, no one will ever have to fear a nuclear weapon again-"

"Because they'll all be afraid of Dr. Manhattan? Because they'll all be afraid of you!"
He crumpled, sinking down another inch, but stared at him with fiery, accusing eyes.
"It's not the end of war if you're just going to kill people!"

"Everyone will be- look at me, Adrien-"
He cupped his face.
"Everything will be different after this, everything will be better. Don't you see that? I'm going to make sure-"

"No it will not! Because you'll be living a lie - I'll be living a lie - I'm married to just one big, fat lie!" Abruptly he broke off and turned away, facing the wall now and slumped over, leaning on it, bursting into tears.

Adrian was speechless for a long moment, unable to figure out what to say that could possibly make Adrien see reason.
"Does it matter if it's a lie-"

"Yes it does!"
He managed that through angry tears.
"It matters because you made me love someone who wasn't real! You're not - you're not anything like you made me think - " His voice broke off.
"It matters to me. It -"

"What? What did you think you married? How is this inconsistent?"
He came closer again.
"Would you rather have me do what I said before, and let the world rot? You shuddered and cried then too-"

"I would rather have you honest!" he screamed at him. "I would rather have you help the world without falling back on a cheap trick - you're - you're going to go to hell for this!"

Adrian's eyes widened, and he leaned back, momentarily abashed, before he narrowed them again.
"No," he said quietly. "That would entail having a soul."

Adrien was the one taken aback and ashamed for a moment, before snapping, "Did you in your all-consuming pride sell it to the devil for a chance to save humanity? I should have known - there had to be something - this is it, isn't it. You had to be the one to do it, and you're just going to bask in your fucking goodness even if it needs you to be greatest sinner on Earth!"
