In trying to force composure on himself, he caught that Adrian had just said a particularly dismissive thing to him. He stared.
"Why did she scream?" he said coldly.

Adrian sighed.
"She learned why we're here tonight."

All composure fled, leaving him trembling. "....wuh-why are we here?"

Adrian released him, turned, and paced a few feet away.
He took a deep breath.
"In approximately one hour, Dr. Manhattan will be descending upon the New Year's crowd in Times Square in New York. Once there, he will issue a warning to humanity at large regarding its repeated flirtation with nuclear war, and then he will kill a significant portion of that crowd, instantly and on live television."

Adrien's hand flew convulsively to his face and he gave a muted scream. His own nails scratched his cheek, though he didn't seem to notice.
"Oh God. Oh God. Dr. Manhattan? But you - but you and he are - how can you stop him?" The contents of his stomach, though they were scarcely extant at all, he'd hardly been able to eat, churned. "How do you know this?"

There was another long silence, during which Adrian turned around again to face Adrien with an expression of calm, only slightly saddened resignation.
"Because I asked him to."

There was a short moment in which Adrien took it in almost calmly, only the slightest shadow hanging over his face, before he felt faint enough to collapse against the wall.

Adrian caught him again, held him close and stroked his hair.
"It's going to be all right-"

He screamed, almost in rage more than fear, "Don't touch me!"

"It's not as simple as it sounds, Adrien, and I need you to trust me-"

He pulled back, steps uneven and staggering a bit, slumped shoulder hitting the wall in defeat.
"Trust you? I did trust you -"
His hands were shaking. They lifted to barely cover his face. "I loved you..."

"Adrien, you're only taking this at face value-"

With a shaky in-beath he turned so his back was against the wall. For a moment it seemed as though he were going to slide to the ground, slowly, but he only dropped an inch or two. His hands still hadn't coered his face, but they seemed to be about to hide his eyes at any moment. His voice was throy, a bit muffled. "I thought the entire world of you. You -" The word turned almost into a painful gasp. "You were my entire world. I -"

The briefest look of devastation crossed over Adrian's face. He rushed toward Adrien.
"You don't understand the situation-"

"The situation?" he said, eyes just flicking up to his - wet but hardly irrational. "You - you - you've been a saint to me -"
