"Oh, righteous and modest too? You can't dress up in a costume and play Messiah!"
The tears had come back.
"I can't believe I loved you!"

"Adrien-"

"Didn't I say I'd killed before, Adrian? Do you know what I went through? Or did you just not hear any of it? Are you just going to disregard all of it? It doesn't matter what you do it for, Adrian, a life is a life! So many people!"

"They won't be the first time someone has died by my hands-"

"Yes, I know how you killed your father for revenge - Revenge doesn't make it okay! Peace doesn't make it okay! Nothing does! You'll have that stain on you forever and ever - and - "
He slid down a bit further, looking choked and shocked. "And it'll be on me, too! I'll be helping you - oh god -"
No wonder why Micaela screamed...

"You expect me to give a damn about the state of my alleged soul when it means the rest of humanity can endure?"
Adrian was beginning to sound like he was having trouble modulating his voice.
"Jon would have told me if it failed-"

The fight was getting ugly. Did Adrian not care about his own soul, that was one thing. But when Adrien would be complicit in his knowledge and silence, and suffering on the inside, that blood on his hands even when he'd made no choice and could not, could not call it off himself... did Adrian not care about that?
Adrien pulled off his wedding ring and threw it to the ground between them, the cold, hard clink of it on the tiled eye of Horus devastatingly tiny, just as Adrien felt. "Well he might not have told you whether or not our marriage did -" he said, voice beginning to shake but his anger well-voiced.

"Adrien-"
He didn't move to pick up the ring. He just stared at Adrien for a moment before trying to wrap him in his arms.
"Adrien, you don't understand- if you're thinking of this as a sin, look at it this way- would you rather have the blood of the thousands that will die tonight on my hands, or stay down here and watch the world end? Would you prefer a burden of six billion on your shoulders instead-"

"It's not your job to choose who lives and dies!" Adrien wrenched out of his grip, his voice clear and anguished and angry all at once. "You should accept it, you should let them go and you should go with them - you shouldn't stand apart and play eternal judge - you shouldn't pretend to be God, just because you look at the world and can't see Him in it!"

"Is God going to come and save them, then?"

"For all you know He is!" he retorted, stung as usual by Adrian's self-righteous, smug atheism, and the way he'd so callously turn it on Adrien as a weapon despite knowing Adrien's own religious leanings. "And for all you know he isn't and this is His judgment! It's not for you to know or guess at and it's not for you to decide!"

"Then good. Let him come and spare me the trouble."
He turned and started toward the door.

He backed up against the wall. ""You're cruel and you're a stranger to me now - you lied to me just like you'll lie to them. I wish I'd never met you. I wish never married you. I'd take it all back if I could, just like that!" He ran off.
