Raven could sometimes do that, as well--though usually she didn't bother. Her own expression, from what could be seen beneath her hood, was more or less indifference; it was calculated to appear that way, at least. And...she certainly wasn't. That much was true.
On hearing the news, her scowl became slightly more pronounced. "Fantastic," she sighed. "So much more work for me." It'd take forever to fly home from here, she imagined. San Francisco was a long way away. She started to turn, then paused. "Hmm. Correct me if I'm wrong, but you don't seem French. On vacation?"

This reaction was... interesting. Not without surprise, but not the sort of panic Rogue might have expected. She seemed... able to deal with this. The weirdness of it. Rogue wondered where she was from, though she fiercely told herself it didn't matter.
"Not by choice," she said, the soft southern drawl apparent. "You ain't, either. Looks like we're in the same boat."

Of course, Raven's reaction to this would be that she'd had to deal with far worse situations than this, and she had. For instance, the world had ended several times, and she'd somehow managed (albeit with help) to bring it back to normal. She was usually largely incurious, but if she was going to be here, she might as well talk for the time being.
"How very true," she replied, still flat, and sighed before turning all the way back around. "Though I can just fly back."

Rogue's eyes widened at this, just ever so slightly. She knew there were other people with powers, but she'd never met any who were so open about it. Mutants. The word tasted unpleasant, even in her head.
But there was another issue, and it seemed this girl wasn't aware of it.
"Can you travel through time, too?" she asked. "Because you don't look like you're from 188-whenever it is."

The climate in her version of San Francisco being different, Raven saw no reason to be shy about her powers. They were fairly obvious, anyway, and anyone could tell that she wasn't a normal human. Neither, of course, was she a mutant, and she had to wonder at just what this girl was so worried about.
...Of course, that additional question took her off-guard, and she groaned in exasperation, facepalming. "Wonderful...nothing is ever easy, is it? No. No, I'm not from the 19th century, and I don't usually travel through time..."

Rogue took a step forward, involuntarily. It was the girl's ease with what she could do. Not that Rogue thought there was anything useful about her... condition. But her normal reticence could not stand against the need to understand. To know.
"But you could," she prompted. "What else can you do? If you don't mind me asking."

Nobody had ever accused Raven of being "touchy-feely", and she was a little surprised that somebody would actually approach her. Still, she didn't flinch, instead watching, her violet eyes passive. She found that her own status was indeed particularly useful, despite the times it had come back to haunt her.
"If you must know," she sighed quietly, "then watch." She sat on the ground, assuming the lotus position, and levitated several feet off the ground. "Azarath, metrion, xinthos!" she chanted, as always, and launched a bolt of energy through which everything seemed to be monochrome black with white outlines, levitating a piece of scenery across the hall.

Rogue stepped back again, likewise involuntarily, but this was more habitual as she did not get close to people as a rule. She stared at the bolt, at the scenery. Though impressed and delighted, she frowned.
"Well," she said. "'Least that's somethin' useful."

Needless to say, Raven was just fine with that. In either case, she moved the bit of scenery to where it could prop up another, still hovering gently. It wasn't that uncommon for people to be unnerved by these displays, so she didn't think of anything of her frown...and she didn't feel ready just yet to demonstrate her astral projection, either.
"As opposed to?"

Rogue looked slightly uncomfortable. She wasn't used to revealing herself. In fact, she hadn't really, since leaving home. She'd barely uttered the word "mutant."
She did now.
"Well," she said. "It's just that some mutants seem to get powers they can do somethin' with. And some get stuck with... well, stuck." She shrugged helplessly. "Bad enough, you know, bein' different. I'd at least want to be cool."

Granted, Raven's demeanor wasn't helping much. But she was, despite herself, interested. In her experience, it was the ones like this that turned out to be really important later on, and so ignoring them would be a bad idea.
Still shadowed, one eyebrow went up. "Mutant? Ah. I'm not one," she added flatly, "but I assume that it's not a desirable thing? Oh, and don't worry. If you knew what I've gone through in exchange for these powers, and what I have to do, you wouldn't want them, either."

"Don't want powers at all," Rogue scowled. "Never asked for them." But she looked up at Raven curiously, from under an errant lock of hair. "But if you're not a mutant... I didn't know anyone could do stuff like that any other way. They just talk about mutants, on the news. You never heard of 'em?"

Few people had. Still, Raven supposed (to herself), if she got to choose again whether or not to take them...she would.
"I've heard of them, of course. I've even met a few, but in general, it's not what the news is talking about. When I bother to pay attention to it. No, I'm not one," she repeated, smoothing her hair out beneath her hood, "but let's just say that I'm not your normal human, either."

"Huh," Rogue said, piecing together that, while neither of them was from this place, they probably weren't from the same one, either. Mutant hysteria was splitting her world, and it seemed impossible that someone else from there would have missed it.
"Yeah, I can see that," Rogue said, though part of her was disappointed that they didn't seem to have the same problems. Not that the other girl was very forthcoming, but the idea that there might be someone to sympathize with her had been momentarily attractive.

((Yeah, this is what happens when comics universes collide.))
Well, that was one more thing for Raven to be grateful for: the lack of a panicked, genocidal world population. How reassuring. Interestingly, at least this girl seemed fairly in control. Most of the mutants she'd met were pretty...flamboyant with the outfits and the ridiculous monikers. She could be serious about it...maybe they weren't so different, despite the worlds-apart thing.
Not that it meant Raven was likely to open up any time soon. She did that only to very trusted, close friends, and even less since the Terra incident. "...Thanks," she said, though with her it was hard to tell if she was sarcastic or serious. "...I'm Raven."
