***FADE IN***
James awoke to the sensation of pain, throbbing and pulsating deliciously through his limbs and his head and his chest and his back. With a pleasant sigh, he allowed his head to roll to one side and caught sight of Sydney's recumbent figure--her own face turned away from him, as it was--so strangely lifeless without her hands grappling and tearing at every part of him.
He briefly wondered whether she were still slumbering and smirked to himself.
His gaze eventually left her form and wandered across the room, ravaged in the wake of what had transpired the previous evening. He took in the wrinkled sea of bed sheets and the shattered pottery lying across the threshold and, of course, the discarded, destroyed pieces of fabric and jewelry which had once been part of their attire.
Oh, it had been a good night.

Sydney laid there in her torn shift and tangled hair, exhausted yet wide-awake. She hadn't slept at moment the entire evening.
Her little experiment had indeed ended spectacularly (to say the very least) but, the moment it was over, she realized how anti-climactic it had all been. All the violence and danger ended up being just another adrenaline rush.
The entire experience had left her with a strange sense of emptiness and the cold realization of how much she had changed. She had followed a stranger home-- a man that had attacked her, and slept with him. Is this who she was now: someone who took irrational risks?
But as she stared emptily at a small, glinting diamond stone from her necklace on the floor of a strange room, in a strange house, next to a man she had meet just hours before, the most disturbing revelation occurred to her: there was no where else she would rather be.
This lie felt more like home than reality.

At length, James sat up and yawned, casting a sidelong glance in her general direction.
"So, you are awake."

She ignored his comment and got up. With a sigh, she walked over to the pile of destroyed clothing that had once been her evening gown, picked up her corset.
"I have a dressmaker in town," she said as she laced herself up. "I have an order there for a day dress that was supposed to be picked up tomorrow. Perhaps you'd be kind enough to oblige?"
But, of course, that didn't sound like a question at all.

"And perhaps I would not. Others know me for various qualities, Miss Howard, kindness not being one of them," he remarked, slumping against the wooden frame of his bed.
He knew he was pressing his luck and could only wonder how she would respond.

Sydney knew exactly what he was doing.
"Mister North," she said calmly as she tightened her corset an inch further than normal out of pure yet unseen rage. "It's truly been a pleasure. To ruin such a night would be a shame."
There was no anger or threatening in her voice or body language. Everything she said was simply a placid warning with a hidden steely edge.
She did not take kindly to being taken for granted.

"We needn't ruin the night," he replied serenely. "Or allow the night to ruin us. Why not continue our fun throughout the day? Why must you take leave so soon?"

Her inner anger was slowly beginning to betray her composed countenance. Her eyes steeled and her jaw set. It was subtle but noticeable.
After what seemed like ages--
"Number twenty-four, Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré," she said, trying and succeeding rather well at controlling her temper. "Order number forty-seven for a Miss Veronica Seymour, a full wardrobe for one deep dusty purple day dress."
"Do you think your servant can remember all that or shall I write it down?"

"Oh, I believe my servants are quite capable of more than you give them credit for, Miss Seymour. I mean, Miss Howard," he replied, placing a certain emphasis on her name and arching a brow at her.

She looked at him, her gaze unwavering.
His snipe failed to bother her and produced little more than an unimpressed grin. She found his lack of movement and urgency more interesting.
Sydney knew he was playing with her. He finally had the upper hand and he was enjoying the ironic shift of power-- he was enjoying watching her squirm. She knew he wasn't going to relinquish the leverage he had so easily, especially when that leverage would keep her in his house for as long as he wanted.
That dress wasn't going to get picked up.
"Is incarceration a part of your collection of perversions as well?" she said wryly as she crossed the room away from him and towards a lavish settee. She had either forgotten or was ignoring her torn shift as she walked over and sat down. Her posture was impeccable despite the situation and she looked at him calmly and without any inhibition.
He wasn't going to win.

"An intriguing thought--I've never put incarceration to use in a situation like this before," he shrugged. "I'm almost upset that I hadn't thought of it myself. But there's always a time for firsts..."
He gazed lazily over the remnants of her shift.
"How would you like that? Being my little prisoner?"

She followed the movement of his eyes and knew what had to be going through his mind.
"Prison is far more mundane than you think, mister North," she said, knowingly but with good humour. She had learned long ago to compartmentalize these things. "Danger and fear quickly give way to sheer boredom and routine. Cell checks in two hour intervals, food at seven, one and eight..."
Her posture gave way and she leaned forward as she rested her elbows on her lap. She angled her head curiously and looked up at him.
"I know what you're thinking," she purred. "You want to keep me in here, tied to that bed with my legs stuck in the air."
Sydney grinned crookedly, knowing what effect that image would have.
"You'd come in, have your way with me... and, of course, in your perfect world I'd struggle and scream and beg you to let me go," she said with a pout, her voice strained to portray a mock cry.
"Then what? Rinse and repeat?"
Sydney snorted and moved, this time lounging against the arm of the settee.
"See, you didn't strike me as the sort of man that would get off on predictability. There are only so many things you can do to me in this room and I can guess all of them. And frankly, they all bore me to tears."

He looked at her with a scrutinizing expression.
"We are, by no means, limited to the confines of this particular room. What if we moved our little party to the gardens? Wild sex with a view.
"I'm sure you'd like that."

Sydney laughed mockingly at the idea.
"Don't presume to know me," she said flatly, her demeanor shifting quickly. "It won't serve you."

"And what would serve me, pray tell?" he inquired a bit sharply.
Patience had never been one of his strong suits.
