He smiled "This may sound a wee bit boring for you, but, it's work. I've got a friend who works at the library who's been searching for a cataloger, it's long, boring work, but it's work, and you won't be bothered too much. If not, I'm sure we can find some place else."

His expression brightened at this.
"Really? I would love to try that." He said softly.
He'd not been to a library--his hours made that difficult--but aside from opera houses, it was one of the buildings he'd always wanted to visit. Being a street rat that could read but not get his hands on any books had been hard.
"And with how my life was, boring would be very welcome."

John smiled "I'll send a letter to her immediately, I'm sure she'll be thrilled" he grinned as the kettle begin to blow "tea?"

"Okay," he said, some of the nervousness that had burned off during the conversation resurfacing.
"No, thanks, I'm good. Uh..."
He'd started to bite his nails, realized what he was doing, and let his hand drop.
"This...kind of scares me."

John poured the water in to his cup and poured some tea leaves as he responded, only turning when he admitted to being scared.
"It's only natural" he set his cup down "you're suppose to be scared" he smirked "it just reminds you that you're human."

He leaned against a nearby countertop, crossing his arms.
"Yeah, but normal people probably to don't want to run in the opposite direction of all this and hide somewhere. I feel stupid for feeling that way."

"It's new for you, you're so used to everything being the way it's been, that anything new is completely foreign. You figured, nothing could surprise you."

"What if..."
He sighed.
"What if ruin it? I'm not good in social situations--not normal ones--and I can't just pretend I didn't come from where I did, and...and...what if they can see it? That I'm...dirty." He was now not so much standing with his arms crossed as hugging himself, trying to seek some comfort from what the darker corners of his mind were saying.

John sighed and lifted Laszlo's chin, he'd been doing this so often to the boy lately, that it had become second nature.
"Listen to me, come now" he looked in to his eyes "everything is going to work out fine. I believe in you."

He met John's gaze.
"I know you don't doubt. But I'm not so sure that everyone else will be as nice about things as you are. Not everybody is that nice."

"I've been told that" he laughed "I can be mean you know" this was true, but rare as Laszlo had seen in the jail. He chuckled "Self confidence is learned not taught, I can only tell you what I know and I know you'll make yourself proud."

He laughed a bit dully.
"Pride's not something I'm worried about."
He wasn't too sure about being able to win anyone's acceptance. Anyone not John or Miles, anyway.

"You shouldn't worry about any one other then yourself, you're changing your life for you, not for anyone else, right?"

"I want other people. My life's been empty of people--well, of the interacting you should get. Wouldn't be much change if I trade a bunch of backstabbers for ones that are repulsed. I'd still be very alone."
He'd made a lot of acquaintances, but there were only two he could really rely on--and while he knew Louis, the vampire was a creature László wouldn't even try to predict, and everyone else he hadn't had any further contact with beyond first meetings. There was just Miles and John, and (maybe) Isa.

He nodded, he got it, and he understood it better than Laszlo could understand.
He knew many people, but only a few he could call his friends.
"Then let that be your goal."
