"French and mysterious," he said, pretending to think it over.
"I rather like the sound of that."
He chuckled at the girl comment.
"It sounds like they're not all that different from the girls here, in that regard."

"Ah, but you see titles are even rarer in New York. When a country's only two centuries old, the idea of connecting to something so much older is tantalizing."
A small smirk.
"Though I'm still not convinced you're safe from one of your lovely twin neighbors."
((I don't remember their names... whoops))

Olivier had long ago retreated to a farther side of the room, attempting to distract himself from the two that were dancing together. He was starting to curse himself for a fool--it was, really, quite obvious that Evelyn had taken a fancy to Laurent. It was dangerous, really, the man was all wrong for any woman, but Olivier doubted that such unsolicited advice from him would be welcome.
Still, he couldn't help but be frustrated. It would just end as it always did--with a girl in tears and Laurent pretending they didn't exist. Olivier didn't want that again, especially not with this one. Evelyn...was different. With a sigh, he downed a bit of his champagne, his gaze flicking back in the direction of Evelyn and Laurent dancing.

"...hence why I don't think I'm very safe from many of the debutantes in Paris." He finished.
"Which is why I try to avoid them."
((Sorry about it starting again at the end of a convo, I couldn't think of who the twins were, either. XD))

She giggled, which was sort of embarrassing but she didn't care much.
"I'm clearly a title-grubbing New York debutante; are you going to avoid me too?" She teased.

He grinned.
"Oh, but that's different. I'm sure a New York debutante didn't have her ears filled with tales of the Desmarais family or the Pontmercys, the Blakeneys or, for good or ill, the de Chagnys. You'd be better at forming your own opinion on us."
((Name drop name drop name drop...doodoodoo...))

"True. Vanderbilts, maybe, but not de Chagnys."
She smirked.
"Though whether it's good or bad that I've formed my own opinions remains to be seen."

"Vanderbilt...sounds familiar." He said off-handedly.
"Hopefully, it's a good thing."

"And you? Are you above having your opinions influenced by society?"
While her mother hadn't ever gossiped much about French society, she got the feeling there might be some rumors floating around about her mother's side of the family, and subsequently about her. Not everyone cared so little for the beau monde as Adrienne Bass.

"When I was younger, admittedly, I was influenced. These days I try not to let what others say influence my opinion. I like to make my own judgements."
That said judgements were probably not especially appropriate never really crossed his mind.

"As a matter purely of curiosity then, what exactly have you heard about my family?"
There was a reason she'd grown up in New York instead of Paris. While she believed her mother when she said the modern world suited her far better than the 19th century, Evie was pretty sure there had been a big to-do when Adrienne had married Chuck.
However, whatever he was going to say was going to have to wait, as the music ended. Not wanting to be asked to dance again by someone else, she applauded the musicians politely and subsequently grabbed Laurent's hand to start pulling him behind a pillar. It looked a lot like they were sneaking off to make out.
"Not the most convenient of places to talk, but I'd really rather not get kidnapped and have my toes stamped on again," she said, remembering quite a few guests who had danced none-too-pleasantly with her before. "Not being able to say no is really very obnoxious."

The more he saw of her, the more he liked her--and it was a far different sort of like than what usually surfaced. Of course, he found her attractive, but there was a lot more to it than that.
He was actually interested in what she had to say, something incredibly momentous to anyone that knew Laurent.
He was grinning when they ducked behind the piller. He was doing a lot of grinning around her, it seemed. But he found it impossible to be in any frame of mind other than a positive one with Evie.
"Admittedly, I don't know much about the Bass name, it's mostly d'Enjolras that anyone speaks of around here. And there is...well...a lot of talk." He was trying to be diplomatic, though he was sure she'd probably have heard about whatever had been slung around in regards to her mother's side of the family. Bass, being Americans, were talked about only in the sense that they were foreign money.

((Please God say Olivier saw them and like challenges Laurent for Evie's honor or some shit or... oh God they actually can start making out behind a pillar and Olivier catches them))
"I'm a big girl, potty trained and everything," she said, looking at him pointedly. She hadn't let go of his hands, and pulled on them entreatingly. "Come on, Uncle Nicki won't say a word and Maman just says that it was in another time."
She hadn't realized how nice his eyes looked up close. And he was really very attractive when he smiled, which she thought he probably didn't do too often. She giggled and nearly blushed out of embarrassment.
Get it together!

((Ahahaha...which one? 'cuz either can happen.))
"Well, when you put it that way..." He said, squaring his shoulders dramatically.
"Quite a few were scandalized at the marriage of a member of an old French family to Americans, but to top it all off there was some talk about said American...quite the one with the ladies. d'Enjolras has had so many rumors about them, they've been flying about since one led a revolution all those years ago. A lot of talk about him, actually, but also...Adrienne?" He was starting to get a bit fuzzy on names, as Laurent hadn't paid that much attention to the stories--he just knew the stories.
"I don't want to go on too far, since some of it could be called slander against the dead, on top of, er, what is said of Adrienne."
((Ugh, I'm sorry he's so vague, but I actually only know a little bit about Adrienne/Chuck.))

((haha it's all good, and the making out part should happen for sure and also the olivier finding them))
"I figure it's better to go in knowing what may be thrown at you." A valuable lesson from Auntie Blair. "And I won't turn you in, it'll be our secret." Her head tilted conspiratorially, though her tone was dry. Gossip didn't hurt when you were asking for it. Or at least when it was about you.
"And we do love a good scandal," she said brightly. Both sides of the family included, though for Dad she thought it had always been more of a cry for attention.
