A small laugh escaped her lips. "That's like asking an artist to pick her favorite color. I could list at least twenty I consider favorites, and not be close to finished. Also, you probably wouldn't recognize most of them."

He chuckled.
"Well, how about the first that comes to mind? Even if I probably haven't heard of them."

She took just a moment to compile a small list. "Mozart, Debussy, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Gershwin, Boubil and Schonberg. Also Clapton." A smile formed on her lips. "Couldn't help myself."

Some of them he knew, yes, but the rest went over his head. What he did recognize gained a smile.
"An interesting bunch, there. I'd say I'd agree on the Mozart front. I don't often listen, but when I do, it tends to end up being one of his compositions."

"Oh, and I forgot Puccini. My mother can't sing, but she loves opera. It's what I grew up listening to and singing."

"I don't know if you've heard, but there's a new opera coming soon--written by both Mozart and Beethoven. You should hear all the rumors swirling around that collaboration. Can't think of any off the top of my head, but then I don't pay attention to gossip."

"This conversation is starting to bear a distressing resemblance to one I've already had. Namely, with Olivier. So we're going to stop discussing opera, and start talking about something else. Fencing, for example," she said decidedly. "If I use up my opera discussion topics with you, I'll have none left for Olivier, and that's generally where our conversations end up." This last part was tinged with a somewhat glum tone, as if she really did wish they could talk about something else, but the Fates just didn't seem to have it planned that way."

"I was starting to sound like him? I'm glad you warned me, then. Who knows what sort of thing might have come tumbling out of my mouth if you hadn't."
It was just as well, as that had really been one of maybe three things he knew about the opera at present. One of the others being that Mozart composed them.
"As for fencing, I would suggest you give it a try--quite invigorating sport, and does wonders for the reflexes."

She had a very strong urge to turn that comment into a sex joke, then decided not to for sake of propriety, or something.
"I'll keep that in mind; it's one of the things I haven't managed to get around to. Not much opportunity where I live... though I'm surprised you aren't stomping about claiming women can't possibly fence because they're too busy making babies, given society's standards."

It was actually a shame that she didn't crack the joke, as Laurent was one of the few that would have appreciated it (and certainly not have been offended).
He chuckled.
"I admit, at first, my mind wandered in that way of thought. Lord knows it did. After meeting the various interesting young ladies in this city, however, I've come to realize that it isn't so cut-and-dry as that."

"If that's a veiled compliment, I accept," she teased. "Though I confess at home I'm considered quite boring."
Well, maybe not boring exactly, given her parentage and position, but not nearly as ruthless as Auntie Blair, not as scandalous as Papa, not as rebellious as Auntie Serena had been. She didn't even drink much at parties, and certainly didn't use any illicit substances. So for a socialite, bland.

He grinned.
"You can certainly take it as such. Though I'd hardly call you boring."

"At least in France I get to be glamorously American."
But she buzzed happily inside, which was happening more and more around him.

"Fantastically American! Hmm...so, what would I be in New York?"
He had actually never been on the other side of the Atlantic, and as a traveller he'd always meant to. Interactions with Evie kept reminding him of this fact. Perhaps he'd make a trip...but not yet.

((totally didn't see this! oops))
She considered it a moment, giving him an almost-indecent look up and down. "French and mysterious, and trust me, mention you're an old family and you'll have at least ten American girls all over you. They fall all over themselves for titled men."
