*Eric's brow lowered a little more sharply than he would have preferred. But he had been on this earth for a long time and had seen many places and the thought that she was suggesting a place he had never even heard of...it was strange. He quickly smoothed his brow back to a more neutral appearance.*
"I have not." Obviously. *He cursed himself.*
"Is it a long journey?" *Perhaps it would have to be someone really efficient at club management.*

"Ah! That's all right, it seems to be variable who knows it and who doesn't. It's not terribly far, by some reckoning, though it takes some doing in finding it. The way in is rather tricky thanks to the magic of the elves." The way she spoke, one could tell she considered the elves' magic inferior to that of the fey .

((Yeah...not really. XD)) He held out his hand to her, pretending not to notice the not-quite-subtle look of disappointment that crossed Olivier's face when he realized he'd been bested again. Well, but Laurent couldn't help it if Olivier was a bit too plain of personality to hold a girl's attention for long. "Do the two of you go to every social event together? Or just the ones I attend?" She teased.

"Oh, we actually don't usually move in the same circles as each other, Laurent and I." He said, though what he really wanted to say was that Laurent, if he did follow, did so out of spite and because he wanted to one-up Olivier.

He could guess what Olivier was thinking, though it wouldn't have bothered him to know it in any case.
"Ah, we just happen to bump into each other at times, is all. I suspect luck or fate or whatever you wish to call it seems to like us being all together." He said diplomatically.

Either way, she put her hand elegantly in Laurent's outstretched one, where it fit quite nicely--his hands were somewhat large, and hers were small but strong from years of playing piano (and guitar, which gave said hands their only imperfection--calluses on the tips of her fingers). "I'll have to thank Fate, then, next time I see her."

With her hand in his own, he walked out onto the dancefloor with her, wearing a devilish smile on his face.
"I think I'll thank her, too."

"For orchestrating your nephew's providential attendance of the same party, of course," she said seriously, then paused. Her lips pursed a little, and she looked at Laurent with a direct gaze. The look in her dark eyes would have been described by 19th-century party guests as 'brazen', but as a New Yorker from the 21st century, it was simply how she had learned to address people. It was also softened by the fact that she was about 5'4" in her flat dancing slippers.
"You two don't like each other much, do you," she asked frankly.

One lip curled at the first comment. A little, but it was noticeable.
"Of course."
His expression shifted to a slightly curious one when her gaze became searching, and he'd wondered at what she was thinking about when she'd made her statement.
"It's that obvious, is it?" He said. If someone could clearly see it, there was really no use in denying it.

"I learned early that two things become exponentially easier when you know how to read people: society and business," she said simply.
Both her parents had a natural talent for reading others which they used (almost unconsciously) to different purposes. Her mother (and therefore their family) remained socially untouchable because she could read others and give nothing of her own feelings away, and her father was a successful businessman because he could easily discern a business associate's weaknesses, and therefore make sure deals worked out to his benefit. The skill was necessary in the world they lived in, and they had instilled it in their children.
"So it's not that you're obvious, but that I can see things that aren't obvious. By the way, Olivier is largely unaware. What he doesn't understand frustrates him, and for him, you're difficult to understand."

"I think I should be wary of you," he said, joking.
"But in all seriousness--you're right. There's been an...enmity...there for a long time. Not because he's the favorite son--not that nonsense, although I know there are who would claim as much."
His expression turned distant a moment before he focused back on Evie.
"I know he's aware of there being something, and he's certainly had his share of frustrations in dealing with me...but then, it's frustrating dealing with him, as well. I don't think much would change if he was told outright about how I feel--I think he's been slowly developing a mutual dislike of me."

He could be right, she thought. She was the sort of person who was far more dangerous than she seemed, though she had enough goodness (and sense) in her not to stomp around like some kind of Jezebel. Despite wide brown eyes with thick lashes, she could easily twist situations to her benefit. Those eyes saw more than expected.
"Frustration generally ferments into enmity, and enmity can become outright malice." And with those happy words, the music struck up, warning the dancers to take their places.
"Now, on to something more cheery for the reel. Don't you have any hobbies, besides midnight zebra-watching and party-attending?"

Glad for the change of tune, both literal and figurative, he moved into the dance with her as he answered.
"Well, I'm also a horseman, which I'm sure you've guessed, and on occasion one can find me fencing or going for a swim."

"How very ...Romantic Movement of you. Though I suppose I can see you brooding away on a moor," she commented as the dance separated them for a moment, moving with her customary light grace. When they rejoined, she resumed conversation. "In addition to studying, which doesn't really count as so much a hobby as an obligation, I play piano, guitar, have dabbled in violin and cello... but what I really do is sing."

"Well, I wouldn't brood on a moor, but I've gone hunting out there before." He said, teasingly.
"Singing, hmm? Do you have a favorite composer?"
A lot of society girls were taught singing, though most of them were...well, awful or just did not have the knack for it. He had a feeling Evie would actually be good at it.
