"We're not really supposed to talk about it--but I can say does the same thing I do, to a greater extent."

"How very strange and mysterious!" Meg said in mock awe.

"Oh this family is very strange and mysterious." *He informed her mock-seriously.* "Except for the tarts. Those are pretty straightforward. Can't say the same about the pain au chocolat."

Meg glanced at the clock on the wall and suddenly pushed the rest of the tart into her mouth in alarm.

"I think if we leave now we can make it in time for you to change into... into whatever-it-is-Ballerinas-wear."
*He offered her his arm.*

**NEW DAY**
*It was a coldish fall day when Eponine decided she'd teach Marianne to make, not just serve and arrange, her pastries. Despite her soft hands and aristocratic lack of cooking experience, she caught on fast, and soon Eponine was taking off more and more to visit her grandchildren, leaving Marianne to hold down the fort. She was never gone for too terribly long, but enough time for Marianne to think. And she certainly, certainly had lots to think about.*
*So it was that she ended up with a fresh batch of croissants just put in the oven, flour spattered in her hair and on her face, a contented feeling settling through her. There was more to feel in this life, she knew, but a feeling of safety and stability which she had never felt before, despite her upbringing, was finally beginning to set in.*

**NEW DAY**
*Eponine carried Cosette in, setting her down in a chair.* "Now, do you like hot chocolate?"

Eventually, Cosette had woken up, and accepted that this was really happening. Hearing Eponine, her eyes widened even more, and she nodded eagerly. "Oh, yes, Madame! Very much!" She had been lucky enough to get some once from a guest at the inn, as her hostess would no doubt remember.

*Eponine did indeed remember that particular incident. She... hadn't been happy about it. Now, however, she set about heating the milk, placing a flaky pain au chocolat in front of the girl. Time to see if she was that Cosette...*
"So, Cosette, how did you come to be on the road into Paris all by yourself?"

Her smile was as warm and hopeful as ever, despite the poor condition of her teeth. Between small bites, savouring the taste, she looked up and seemed concerned.
"I...I had to run away. I was doing my work, but then Azelma came in and started picking on me again, and she said my mother...that she...well, I went out and heard someone in the hall mention that she really was dead." The girl's eyes filled with tears. "I couldn't stay there! They would have been even harder to me!"

*Eponine extended a hand to the girl.*
"Shh, of course you did, it's alright..."
*Oh, it was her. There was no question.*
"You can stay with me as long as you like; my son Alexei just moved out and I've an extra room at my apartment..."
