*Marianne nodded.*
"So you said your daughter was married to the Baron Pontmercy?"

*Eponine smiled.*
"Yes, she married Marius a few years back and has two precious children now."

*Marianne grinned.*
"And what are their names?"

*Eponine beamed proudly, taking a picture of the twins out of her reticule.*
"There's Alain, and the girl is Johanna."

*Marianne took the picture and looked closer.*
"Oh, they're adorable!" *She exclaimed, giggling.*

*Eponine smiled.*
"Thank you. I wasn't too excited when Aimee and Marius eloped, but it turned out for the best."

"They eloped? How romantic!" *She sighed.*

*Eponine chuckled.*
"Well, that or foolhardy, but as I said it turned out just fine."

"And I read that they honeymooned in Italy?"

"Yes, in Rome. I think Aimee would have loved to see more, but then she was pregnant and she had to return home."

*Marianne sighed.*
"I've always wanted to see Rome. Or anywhere outside France, actually."
*Eponine chuckled.* "I've never left Paris, let alone France."
*The conversation continued pleasantly for the rest of the afternoon, and they downed all of the lemonade as well as a plate of pastries before Marianne decided that she should probably go.*
"But wait." *Eponine said.* "Would you be interested in working here, possibly? I need a girl to watch after the store when I'm not in, and run register when I'm baking."
*Marianne smiled.*
"I'd love to!"
*Eponine beamed back.*
"Tomorrow then? Here, at 6 AM? Weekdays only."
*Marianne nodded.* "That sounds wonderful! Thank you, Eponine!"
"Have a lovely day, Marianne."
*With that, Marianne left.*

*Eponine was at the back of the shop, making pastries, and Marianne was working the counter, when Alexei led Meg in. The display case was a veritable treasure trove of every imaginable pastry, from the simple tartines and croissants to more complicated confections that Alexei didn't bother learning the names of.*
"Afternoon, Marianne." *He said to the girl.*
"Afternoon, Alexei." *She said back, waving cheerily.*

"Alexei, is that you?" *Came a voice from the back. From the kitchens emerged a very skinny woman with long, dark hair, who was absolutely covered in puffs of flour. Her face broke into a grin.*
"And who is this?"
"Mama, this is Meg. Meg, this is my mother, Eponine Thenardier."
*Eponine nodded at the girl.* "I'd shake your hand but chances are I'd cover you in flour. Now, I assume he's been bragging about my tarts again?"
