*Holmes quirked a smile.*
"An excellent point. Which is why the shift to the tenor is suspect. Whatever's going on, he is at the center of it."

"Could it be as simple as romantic obsession?"

*Holmes seemed a bit nonplussed by the suggestion. It wasn't that it hadn't suggested itself to him. But that fact didn't make it less incomprehensible.*
"I suppose..." *he pondered laboriously,* "that it takes all kinds. Then again, romantic proclivities have always been the one mystery I find myself unable to comprehend." *He glanced sidelong at Irene.* "In others."

*Irene smiled*
"I suppose so. But in a man so unstable, such an obsession could prove...dangerous for the object."

*Holmes nodded.*
"More than you know; it seems that Huggins, vain devil that he is, may well be susceptible to the man's flattery. We must act soon, or we will have an even bigger mess on our hands. For all that Huggins brought the case to me in the first place."
*Holmes had well recognized the signs that Carlos had warmed towards his stalker. Such weakness of personality no longer surprised Holmes, but it still disgusted him.*

"This man- the tenor- well, perhaps it's best for him that he enjoys the attentions. If he rejected Destler..."
*She did not say it, but her own experience seemed to hover in the air*
"Do you think his life is in danger?"

*Holmes frowned.*
"I do not know, for sure," *he said uncomfortably.* "Certainly, it is better to keep the man appeased, for the time being. But I fear that his rational responses--bringing the case to me, for instance--will soon be overruled by emotional considerations. Which may work against us."
*He sighed.*
"But that is neither here nor there, as it does not change our course of action. We have a chain of evidence that will not satisfy the police. I will have to confront Destler myself."

*Irene took his hand*
"I wouldn't ask you to stay away from him, even if I thought you would listen. But promise me you will be careful."

*Holmes squeezed her hand in response, as if the action could say all the things he could not put into words.*
"I am always careful," *he said.* "But I will be more so, for you. I will not willingly leave you alone. But I must do what is right."

"Where would I be if you didn't?"
*She kissed him sweetly*
"I'll be here for a while longer. Go and do your job."
**LATER**
*Irene was back at the library, looking over the sheets of music. There was something about them that seemed...wrong to her. It seemed like he'd written one way, then there'd come a point where, while his style was still the same, the tone had changed completely.*

*A tall, dark man with long hair, dressed in the Edwardian style that was so popular in London, came silently up to the beautiful woman who was looking over the sheets of music. She seemed to look for something... special. He smiled softly and approached her, seemingly interested in the sheets of music.*
"Oh dear, not exactly Beethoven, is it?"
*He clicked his tongue and shook his head sadly, as to show that he didn't enjoy this kind of music. He looked at her with his dark, mysterious eyes.*
"I would call it music of the night..."

*Irene looked up slowly at the man who adressed her. It could be a coincidence. It wasn't, but there was no harm in pretending.*
"You're standing in my light, sir."

*Marc smiled charmingly and gave her a deep bow.*
"Ah, forgive me, my lady. That was not my intension."
*He moved to her other side, not to stand in her light.*
"Is this better?"

"Thank you."
*She tried to look at the music, but couldn't.*
"I'm sorry, have we met?"
Say no.

Only in your nightmares....
*Marc smiled charmingly and bowed politely again.*
"Forgive my manners, Mademoiselle. My name is Count Marc Warren Dracula. I have recently arrived from abroad. If I had met a charming lady as yourself, I am sure I would have remembered."
