This statement was inconsiderate at best, and heartbreaking at worst, but Adrien did not notice, as his breath hitched in his throat, as he was noticing instead the insinuation. "Oh, Adrian," he breathed, voice breaking, "I'm not... I'm not good."

"Yes, you are," he said, ruffling Adrien's hair in a fond, strangely fatherly sort of way.

"Oh, God, no, Adrian, I'm - " He broke off and inhaled sharply, frozen. He was very shortly going to cry.

"You what?"
He took the boy by the shoulders and attempted to tilt him up to face him.

Adrien turned his face away, then turned away suddenly, unable to face him when he started crying in shame. He knew Adrian had no patience for this.

Veidt nearly shook him to try to get some sense out of him, but this seemed so unnecessarily cruel that he relented and pulled Adrien close to him, with an irritated sigh and a glance skyward.

He caught Adrien off guard, and frightened him, probably unintentionally, and, eyelashes wet, he blinked, lips parting hesitantly to speak.
"Adrian, I... you have no idea what I've done."
And he wasn't going to cry again - not at all, he swore it - but he threw himself into Adrian's arms, holding him tightly.

"There, there," he said awkwardly. After a moment, he punctuated this with an additional "There." for good measure and a cursory pat on the back.

Adrien embraced him, but he was grimacing. No, he couldn't... it wasn't right to be comforted for this. He pulled back again, tense.
"Adrian, I... I can't," he said vaguely. "Oh God, if you knew... oh god, you wouldn't be able to say that about me anymore."

His voice was almost inaudible and rough. "I'm not talking about that." It was a curt response, but a hurt one.

"There are worse things in the world than whores, Adrian," Adrien cut him off, voice sounding slightly muffled despite the curtness.
