"It's fine," he said, now nearly pleadingly, staring up at him with big, anxious eyes.
Just because he knew Adrian couldn't love him, and he wasn't expecting him to, didn't mean it didn't ache to have this pointed out to him. He wanted them to accept that and move on so that he would no longer have to think about it -

He shook his head again. "No! Nothing." He hesitated, then tentatively lifted his hand to touch Adrian's face. He was anxious. He couldn't quite believe everything Veidt was saying to him.

This succeeded in actually catching him at something of a disadvantage, and it forced him to rephrase it.

He crouched on the bed next to Adrian, arms around him to comfort him as though being a genius was a tragedy, and kissed him just before the ear. "Just that I - love you," he said gently. "It's okay."
