Adrien hadn't been in Adrian's room since the first night, and of course his showing up had nothing to do with planning to; he just decided he might get more attention from Veidt if the man wasn't just passing through the room in which he was working on a jigsaw puzzle. It had not been out of some desire to pounce on Adrian conveniently whenever Adrian returned, as it usually was whenever Adrian came into his office at Veidt Enterprises and found him there.
Nonetheless, Adrien had gotten a portion of the puzzle completed on the floor on the other side of Adrian's bed, and was not paying enough attention to sounds coming from elsewhere to notice when the door opened.

Adrian approached where the boy was working on the puzzle and stood over him, hand on hip and one corner of his mouth curved into the beginning of a wry smile.

"Oh, hi, Adrian," he said, looking up in surprise and starting to smile. "I didn't see you." He gestured towards the puzzle, leaning his weight onto his other elbow in order to do so.

"Do you need help with that?"

Adrien's smile brightened even further and he shyly scooted over on the floor to make room for Adrian.

Adrian knelt beside him and looked over the puzzle pieces laying across the floor in disarray for a moment with one hand tucked under his chin. He then leaned closer to see the pieces and, after examining one of them and comparing it to the picture on the box, set it down in the middle of the empty space and began quickly adding the other pieces to the puzzle around it without once having to take two pieces apart for fitting wrongly or turning them over.
"There," he said, after two minutes or so of this.
He had completed the entire puzzle.

Adrien looked very pale.
"Oh," he said, feeling useless. He wondered how much of Adrian's life looked like that to him. Wondered if sex did. It was not a pleasant feeling. How anything stimulated him at all was a miracle.

"Is that not what you wanted?" he asked, looking at Adrien in vague confusion.

"Oh? Oh. I'm fine," he said belatedly, looking at the finished puzzle like a ghost. He wasn't quite hearing what Adrian said.

"You seemed to be having some trouble there."

"Oh," he said, after another pause, coming to his senses, or seeming to. "Ah. Well. It's gone now," he said, with a vague hand gesture at the puzzle. His mood seemed rather drained.

He bent closer to the puzzle and then made a frustrated sighing noise.
"You forgot to put anything under it, I see. Good luck moving it."

"It doesn't matter," he said, almost inaudibly. "I was just going to take it apart again afterwards anyway."
He sighed, not on purpose, and put a hand on Adrian's shoulder as he stood and went to get his coat.

"Adrien, have I offended you somehow?"

He turned midstep and came over to sit beside Adrian again, embracing him gently. "Of course not," he whispered.
