Magda looked between them, back and forth.
"Alfred," she said softly, almost reluctantly, "I think he's telling the truth."

"Yeah... so am I." Alfred shook his head.
Now he was certain... all this should just be over.
"If anyone needs me," he began, very slowly, almost like some kind of terrible emotionless robot. "I'll be watching the sunrise." With that he turned and moved to walk past Magda.

"No, you're not," Magda said decisively. "Hyou're coming with me."
She grabbed his shoulder.

Alfred shrugged off her hand on autopilot before continuing on his way.
Some things never changed... he didn't even seem to really notice her.

"Alfred!" she said sternly, this time forcing herself in front of him.

"I do not wish to hurt you... please move out of my way." Alfred appeared to be looking straight through her, his voice a monotone.

This time Alfred did look at her... and into her actual eyes.
"Then we're even."

Magda glanced back at the room they'd just left. Herbert appeared to have melted into the shadows.
"I... I know how you must be feeling, and I vant to help you," she said slowly, as she turned back to look at Alfred. "I run a group now that helps people like us."

"I don't want help anymore, Magda... please, let me go and finish all this." He briefly followed her wandering gaze. "I have nothing to exist for anymore."

"What if you found something? Alfred, listen to me-"

"Everything I've ever 'found' turned out to either not have been mine in the first place or to be taken away from me. Just... move out of the way, please. That's all I want you to do for me, Magda. Let me rest in peace." It was something long overdue, after all.

She managed to grab him again.
"Alfred- Alfred, listen to me. God doesn't hate you."

"I'm an atheist." He shook her off again.
At least he'd managed to get that part of being a scientist down. It was a rather nice philosophy, even now... or maybe especially now... that his existence would just be over.

When all else fails, resort to emotional manipulation.
"Alfred," Magda said firmly, "if you turn your back on what I'm offering you, you are failing me all over again. Do you want to die knowing that you did that?"
