"I suppose some understanding could come from seeing... things." Yager fell silent for a moment, his gaze distant.
"Someone begging you for release from their existence gets to you, no matter what they are. Especially when you can't give them any true comfort, any guarantees... I do not know what lies beyond this world..." The vampire hunter sighed and ran a hand through his hair, then shook his head.
"I suppose the best thing to do is to just keep on going, somehow."

"I wonder if any of us know..." He said, sounding distant.
He quickly snapped back to the conversation.
"Indeed. One must keep strong."

"Perhaps I should ask an angel, next time I meet one... well, one that isn't preoccupied with sticking something sharp and fiery into my guts."
Yager didn't like angels... mostly because angels were rather big on the whole 'sticking something sharp and fiery into him'.
"But for now... probably best to focus on the better things in life... or unlife... or whatever."

Krolock wondered where Yager got his ideas about angels, but he wasn't entirely keen on pursuing that subject. Such matters were a bit of a sore spot for him.
"Ah, yes. They are good things about this. Why, the sheer vast amount of knowledge one can amass alone..."

"More than anyone can amass in a mortal lifespan... and well, they do say that some men are born in the wrong time, so I suppose there's the option of testing that theory."
Actually, Yager wasn't quite sure who 'they' were... but they often had a lot of theories that seemed to somehow make sense.

"Indeed yes. The 19th century is not my century, but I rather like it for all it's idiosyncrasies."
He paused, the theme of amassing knowledge still at the forefront.
"I don't suppose you'd mind seeing the castle library?"

"Not at all... as long as you keep me from getting lost." Yager chuckled.
Castle libraries were often big to begin with... vampire castle libraries had a tendency to be huge.

"Oh, of course. The way there is actually fairly straightforward..."
The ramblings through the castle stopped, the count's movements and direction far more purposeful now.
"I have tried, over the years, to fill it with tomes of every subject I could find, be it common or esoteric."

"Just filling it or did you actually read them?" There was, after all, a considerable difference between the two.
"My own literary conquests end at Don Quixot... not that I don't enjoy stories, it's just..." The vampire hunter gestured. "A lack of time, I suppose... I live mostly on the road, so carrying around a library is far from convenient."

Krolock laughed.
"Reading them as well as stocking them, of course. Some perhaps more times than others, but we all have our favorites."
Gave Yager a sidewise glance.
"I do believe I have one of the original printing editions of Don Quixote. So old but in a very good state of preservation."

Yager looked eager at that last bit of information, but also a bit hesitant. Like a puppy who knew he loved your new sneakers, but was also painfully aware that it was that very love that might lead him to destroying them.
"Then I think it's best not to let me anywhere near it," he laughed.

He grinned.
"Ah, I shall have to keep an eye on you, then."

Yager gave the vampire a playful nudge.
"You mean you hadn't noticed that already? Some wise man you are."

"I was giving you the benefit of the doubt, my good man. Of course, I could have you placed under constant surveillance..."
Was...was that actually a playful tone in his voice?

"Ooh, the whole detached-shadow-making-scary-motions-behind-my-back thing?" Yager grinned. "Or the suspiciously-large-bat-following-me-around thing?"
