"How in the Red Queen's name did that detail slip my mind?" he asked in response to the Hare. "Good catch, Hare!"
The Hatter paused as he continued to make the girls' tea, a sudden realization striking him. (He was grateful it wasn't literally; realizations tended to smart a little back in Wonderland.) "Now, if only I knew French."

"Yes, quite a bother, that." The Hare scratched his chin. "I do hope that won't become problematic, us running a shop in France and all..."

"I speak French," Alberta blurted. She tried not to shrink in on herself when everyone else turned to stare at her. "A little. I mean, I'm not from that part of Canada, but you pick up on these things."

"Canada? Where would that be?" The Hatter asked.

"It's...in North America?" Alberta stared at the man with a look torn violently somewhere between disbelief, confusion, and horror. "Right above the Unitied States?"

Not wishing to disturb anyone, Heather inched towards what she assumed was the coat the Hatter had mentioned. They might be finished talking by then, or maybe she could leave a thank-you note.

"Hey now! See here!" the Hare said sharply, seeing what she was up to and misreading her intentions. "That particular item is not for sale!"

"Oh, not to worry, Hare!" The Hatter exclaimed in turn, sweeping over and giving her the coat. "The poor girl was dropped into France without a moment's notice! Couldn't even take a coat with her, and you do know how cold it can get sometimes."

"Ah, yes, I see. Sorry about that, then - just got a little excited. Yelling at customers, I hear, is almost as important towards being an official shop-keeper as the act of selling things."

"All's forgiven, Hare," he assured his companion, "and I believe the girls' tea is finished."
He poured it out into (mismatched) cups, setting them onto the table along with a plate of bread and butter.

Alberta hesitated, eyeing the items of food and drink with evident mistrust.

Heather wrapped the huge coat around her, turned the sleeves up and sat down to enjoy the offered refreshments. She kept her gaze lowered throughout.

Since the other girl seemed to think it was okay (and didn't drop stone dead or get sick after eating the food), Alberta sat down to join her.
"So," she prodded her gently after a moment, "what next? Did you still want to try and find a police station or something?"

"Oh dear." The Hare remembered something. He sidled up alongside his companion. "Psst...Hatter. Did we ever bother to figure out what we were doing for pricing?"
