The Hare was in the midst of sorting tea cakes and candy buttons (making sure each jar contained an ample mix of each) when the bell above the door rang.
As the Hare had thoughtfully used one of large clanging schoolbells instead of the more common (dreadfully boring!) tiny tinkling ones, this caused something of a fuss.
"Oh, come in, come in!" The Hare said brightly, waving his paws. "Do come in. Would you like your tea for here or to go?"

First Alberta was caught off-guard by the loud banging of the bell when they came in.
No sooner had she recovered from that than she had chance to take in the rather dizzying state of chaos that random and bizarre objects were scattered about the shop in (and what was that funny smell...?)
Finally, she discovered that there was a talking rabbit behind the counter.
It was no surprise really that she was struck completely speechless, standing there gaping as her two companions pushed their way in behind her.

"I imagine she'd like her tea here, Hare," the Hatter said, half-suggesting and half-stating. "The idea of not drinking tea at a tea-shop! If you make it yourself it's a different matter entirely, but isn't the point of keeping customers to keep them here?"

"Well, I do beg your pardon," the Hare sniffed. "I must confess it didn't make much sense to me either, but it seems like the sort of thing one always says in these situations."

"No doubt one of those strange customs Alice's world has," the Hatter remarked.

"Indubitably," said that Hare. "But, really now, that's enough of that. It hardly seems the t...place," he switched hasily, knowing of his friend's "disagreement" with Time.
He turned back to the customers.
"How do you prefer to take your tea?"

Heather grabbed Alberta's arm and clung to it tightly. She tried to speak a few times, but no sound would come out.

Sensing Heather's panic, Alberta cleared her throat and tried to take some measure of control of the situation. Never mind that she was still pretty freaked out herself.
"It...it's probably a puppet or an animatronic or something," she reassured the other girl quietly (She didn't sound exactly sure of that herself).
Turning back to the man and the...rabbit, she gathered enough of her wits to say, "What's that smell?"

"Oh, that! It's just my laundry."
Hare turned his head, indicating where a unidentifiable grayish mess was simmering away on the stovetop in a large copper saucepan full of water. In addition to the funny smell, great quantities of steam and the occasional violently popping bubble were surging to the surface.
"Lovely, isn't it?" he said proudly, meaning the saucepan. "I just got it today!"

Heather nodded obediantly, though her nose wrinkled and she was still half-hidden behind Alberta.

"Come now, child--what kind of tea would you like?" the Hatter asked, changing the subject in what was possibly the most normal thing he'd done so far. "Time is getting a bit grumpy; he doesn't like it when I dawdle."

She closed her eyes, took a few deep breaths, and determindly released Alberta. After a few attempts which produced no sound at all, and one that only formed a squeek, she finally managed to make something resembling speech: "Ch-chai, please? If. If you have any?"

"There now, that wasn't so hard," the Hatter beamed, setting to work at once. The Chai tea was somewhat unfamiliar to him; before coming to Paris, he'd never heard of it and had only made it once before as a test for his new measuring cups.
They still weren't talking, no matter how many subjects he'd suggested to them.

"I'm starting to think these chaps don't even understand English," the Hare remarked, as if reading his companion's mind. He crinkled his nose in the general vicinity of the measuring cups - and then wriggled it, whiskers twitching.
For no reason, mind. It was just the sort of thing hares did.
"What about you, then? Same thing?" he asked Alberta.

"I...um....uh, sure," Alberta stammered. "I don't really care, whatever works. As long as it's not too strong, please."
She was still looking pretty hard at the rabbit, trying to see if she could find a seam or something to indicate how it worked.
