*She bit her lip.*
"But you see... the thing he was... that he was in danger of doing. It endangered the family as a whole, and I feel awful for doing it but it had to be done."

*Chuck suddenly found himself very intrigued.*
"Who the hell was this girl? Village skank?"

*She put her face in her hands glumly and shook her head.*
"No. She was virtuous and sweet and loved him and that's what makes it all so awful."

*His brow creased into a frown as he stared at her. He never would've imagined.*
"And you've told him about this sense of guilt?"
*Part of him thought not.*

"No."
*She paused and looked at him.*
"I'm not some sort of possessive, jealous person. Really I'm not. Only he'd been gone for so long and had only just come back, and our family's fractured already and I knew if he... if he married her, then we'd never see him again."
*Very small and vulnerable she looked just then. She still didn't quite know what had possessed her--perhaps she really was awful and jealous as her actions suggested. But there had been so much more at stake, and he was her twin, the only boy her age who meant anything to her, and she hadn't been able to bear the thought of losing him.*

*Chuck took a moment to process everything.*
"What's done is done," *he said, aware that it sounded like some serious Confucius shit something out of an ancient book of proverbs.* "All you can do is hope that he'll understand. But don't keep secrets. Secrets... secrets eat away at you until one day, there isn't much left."
*He was also aware that he should be the last person giving family advice but just knew that what he said was the truth.*

"He'd hate me." *She said plainly, hugging her knees and looking out over the ocean.* "And even if I have to hate myself for it, I'd rather let him be heartbroken and get over it than let him hate me forever."

*Chuck too looked off into the ocean as he spoke.*
"And every time you look at him, you'll be reminded of how much you screwed up, but you figure that things'll get easier as time passes-- that, one day, you'll have convince yourself that it wasn't your fault, rationalize."
*He sounded like he was speaking from experience. And he was.*
"Want to know a secret?" *he turned to look at her.* "It doesn't."

*She sighed softly, leaning her head on his shoulder, still looking at the waves, saying nothing. They'd talked enough on serious topics for the day, in her opinion.*

*That completely caught him off guard. Not that he showed it, of course. But it still took him a few seconds to actually think of something to say or do.*
"What do you say to giving your Victorian swimwear a bit of a soaking?" *he asked playfully.*

"I think one day I'm going to explain the concept of a bathing machine. Just to see your face when I do."
*Then she stood, grinning mischievously.*
"Last one in cleans up the picnic!"
*And suddenly she was flying down the beach, kicking up clumps of sand behind her.*

*Chuck was tempted to race her but settled for just watching her. He wouldn't mind cleaning up... or having his valet do it for him. No biggy.*
*He wasn't exactly wearing swimwear but decided to change later. He unbuttoned his shirt, tossed it near the basket and took off his shoes before heading towards the waters.*

*She gasped once she was waist-deep and her body realized it was... cold. Not freezing, but certainly bracing. She'd forgotten how cold the English Channel could be, even in June.*
*She turned and had to take a moment. A shirt. He wasn't wearing a shirt. If he hadn't been lying about women's swimwear (and she still wasn't entirely convinced, she supposed it must be normal to go swimming in just... bottoms. His were at the moment pants, and she didn't think he'd brought a change, but it didn't appear to faze him. It wasn't as if men had breasts, anyway. She just wasn't used to bare chests.*
*With that thought, she dunked herself.*

*Keeping an eye on where she disappeared, he swam under then up, with her in his arms.*

*She came up sputtering and laughing.*
"I can swim, you know."
