*She stared.* "You have to be lying. No other explanation." *She stood and turned, grabbing a navy blue thing off of the couch, where she'd put it.* "Well I'm hungry, so I'll put my suit on and you set up the blanket?" *She suggested.*

"You sure you don't need any help with that thing? It looks rather... complex," *he said, giving the suit a strange look.*

*She held it up and shook her head.*
"Nope, not really. I think I can get the buttons myself."
*With that she went and changed, exiting without the extra skirt piece on. That thing was just silly. Instead she wore a blue sash where the skirt's waistband would have been. To protect her complexion, she also wore a large straw sunhat.*

*Chuck picked up everything they needed and opened the door. He looked back when he heard her come out.*
"Oh no, there's still some skin showing," *he teased.*

*She rolled her eyes and mock-frowned at him as she sat down.*
"Just be glad I'm not wearing a skirt, stockings, and full undergarments with it, like most women do."
*Indeed, her calves were showing more than they had been in her shift, even if the neckline was decidedly higher.*

"Prudes," *he said sarcastically.* "I'm proud of you."
*Chuck set everything down then went into the basket for the food. Not exactly knowing what to take out first, he just left it open in the middle. That way, they could both help themselves.*
"So, is there a curfew that I should be worried about?"
*That was his attempt at small talk.*

*She shook her head, taking an apple.*
"There are two bedrooms, so even if we stay the night nobody will be worried."

*Chuck nodded as he went into the basket for some carrots. He normally hated carrots but, then again, he normally hated small talk. He was finding himself a bit more tolerant of the latter so he decided to see what else he could stand out there at the beach.*
"I actually got to sit down and read the past few days. Some of the books in that chateau are thoroughly entertaining," *he said, then took a bite.*
*No, he still hated them. Making a face, he spit it out.*

*She giggled.*
"Don't like carrots, then?"

*He turned to her, mid spit. Realizing how ridiculous he must look, he grabbed a napkin and wiped his mouth.*
"Never did. Used to pay the maid off to be quiet about the napkins full of them," *he admitted.*

*She grinned.*
"Don't tell Coralie, but I never did eat her broccoli, no matter how nicely she prepared it. In fact I think I went through a stage where I fed everything but bread and butter to the dog."

*Chuck laughed.*
"Not a word," *he promised.*
"I actually had a macaroni and cheese stint. My old man hated it. He'd always say that mac and cheese was too Brooklyn. So I used to sneak out when he'd be asleep and... coerce the chef into microwaving some. I was what? Nine? Already conniving."

*Adrienne laughed.*
"Oh my, so that's where your life of coercion and manipulation began. We can blame the mac and cheese."

*He nodded.*
"And sharpened and honed by... a certain girl at school."
*That was the only way he could put her without wanting a swig of a single malt.*

"Given your reluctance to clarify, I'll just ignore that." *She said simply, pulling out chicken salad sandwiches made from last night's cornish hen leftovers, made with grapes and celery. She grinned. It was her second-favorite food.*
