*There was a long pause.*
"There were a number of very famous entertainers back in the future. They had it all: money, fame, status. Some fair well and some... stop their careers right when they've finally got everything they want."
*He let out a short sigh.*
"I've always wondered why but recently, I've realized that there's a certain... anxiety that comes when you feel that you've attained the unattainable. It's like fear, but not quite. You're afraid of what will happen when everything gets ripped out from under you. Because the higher you are, the further you've got to fall."

"And you're afraid to have what you want, for fear it'll be taken away." *She said softly.*

*He looked down, for a moment then back at her.*
"Aren't we all?"

"In which case it takes immense courage to be truly happy... the courage to know it could all disappear at any moment, and still enjoy it for the time we have."
*As cliche as it was, somehow a Tennyson quote popped into her head: 'Tis better to have loved and lost/Than never to have loved at all. And as true as those words were... both of them were afraid: afraid to love and afraid to lose.*

"Do you suppose that's why only a few are truly happy in this world: because the rest of us are cowards?"
*But really, he meant himself when he mentioned cowards. And it was very poorly disguised.*

*Of course, she caught that undertone.*
*She had picked up the teapot and was pouring the cups now. It was a very different organism than when she hosted a tea party, or had guests, where the pouring was a delicate choreography of hands. Now she was simply pouring tea, not trying to prove grace or elegance.*
"Perhaps. Or maybe those happy people have simply found the right cause, the right person. The one that inspires them to ... be happy." *She'd very nearly said love, but stopped herself before she began.* "People can change, if they try."

*He absentmindedly watched her pour.*
"People don't change. They can't," *he said gravely.*
*Again, in the third person, weakly concealed. There was something in his tone that refused to be hidden and it showed that he was speaking from experience. He had tried and failed and it couldn't be denied.*

*She put the kettle back and placed three cubes of sugar in the cup, soon afterward taking the tea bag out. She didn't like it to strong. As she did this, she didn't speak.*
*After the long pause, she sighed.*
"I think our extended philosophy is quickly running out of steam." *She admitted, smiling weakly.*
*They were talking about themselves, they may as well admit it.*

"Why talk about it when you're living it, hmm?" *he said dully.*

*She sipped at her tea.* "Well it's this or the weather, unless you've got something better." *She attempted, in a half-assed sort of joke.*

*He shook his head.*
"Can't say I do."

"In which case we discuss the weather. I say, sir, it's quite chilly this evening. What say you?" *She said, her tone a teasing one.*

*Her attempts to lighten the mood didn't register to him at all. He remained silent, pensive even.*
"Tell me you never think about what happened," *he said, looking directly at her.*

*She paused. She should have seen this coming. It was bound to come up sometime...*
"You mean after you almost jumped?"

*He didn't say anything and continued to gaze at her seriously. He didn't have to speak to answer yes.*
