*But that very head movement was at just the right angle to force her to kiss him properly on the mouth, or risk banging their noses together (which wouldn't have been pleasant, and also rather awkward if he woke up). It only lasted a second, the merest brushing of lips against lips... but it happened.*
*She pulled back in surprise and blinked, turning to grab a newspaper and pretend (for her own sake) to be interested.*

*It was took quick for him to reciprocate but not quick enough for it to go unnoticed. The kiss, if you could call it that, had jolted him out of sleep but his exterior stayed placid and expressionless, just as if he were. On the inside, though... on the inside, he didn't know what to think. Thus, he found feigning sleep would be easier on both of them.*

*She decided she really needed to move. Her foot was asleep. Sort of. So she tried to move a pillow where she'd been, making sure he wasn't jostled too hard. Once finished, she went to the washstand and set to splashing her face and hair with water--salt tended to make her hair gross, as did it everyone's. She slipped the impromptu headband off and ran her fingers through the curls, dipping them in water first to help spread it.*

*By the time she was done, he wasn't in the cottage any longer.*
*With the glass of wine that he hadn't entirely touched, he sat on the beach by himself. The sun was lower, now, the light golden. Chuck just stared at the waves, the glass of wine making occasional trips to his mouth.*

*She came out a few minutes later, sitting down in the sand next to him.*
"Rose should be here with dinner in about half an hour."

"I'm not really hungry," *he said with a shrug.*

"You clearly haven't smelled Rose's cooking."
*She paused for a moment.*
"And she's like my sister. I haven't seen her in more than a year... it'll be nice to talk with her."

"You'll really appreciate phones and texts when they come along," *he said before taking a drink.*

*She laughed.*
"... you mean that ridiculous impractical invention really catches on? The tellyphone?"

*He couldn't help but snort at that.*
"Normal people just call it phones, Adrienne," *he said sarcastically.* "And what do you mean impractical. They fit in the palm of your hand."

*She rolled her eyes.* "Century-and-a-half time difference. 'Phones' are huge and bulky and impossible to use."
*But just then, Adrienne could hear the sound of carriage wheels. Standing immediately, she whirled and squealed in delight, taking off at a run towards the figure who was exiting the carriage. Knowing her Coralie, she'd been convinced the jostle of the usual cart that staff went about in would hurt the baby, and had managed to cajole the driver into taking Rose and David in the carriage.*
*When she finally reached Rose, the only thing keeping her from flinging her arms around her was the baby in her arms.*
*At four years old, Rose and Adrienne (inseparable friends since birth) had developed a sort of sign language entirely their own--nobody understood but them, and it was an easy form of communication after fourteen years of practice.*
It's so good to see you! Here, let me take him! *Adi signed excitedly, bouncing on the balls of her feet. Rose covered her mouth and smiled, their sign for laughing, after she'd handed her friend the infant.*
I'll start dinner, then?
Of course! David and Tantine Adi are going to watch the sunset.
*Rose smiled and motioned for them to scram, walking into the well-known cottage and beginning to prepare food. Adrienne marched back out to the beach with David, cooing at and coddling him the whole way.*
*There was something about babies that made her turn all mushy and warm and motherly--perhaps natural instinct, perhaps a subconscious striving to be unlike her mother. So enthralled in the infant she was that she walked past Chuck without acknowledging him, going to take the baby and dip his toes in the water.*
"See, there we go, here comes another wave and wheeeee!" *She laughed, holding him up by his arms and swinging him gently with the tide.*

*With one hand casually tucked into his pocket and one holding the wine glass by the rim, Chuck had turned to head back inside when she walked past him. He was a few yards away from the steps of the cottage when he turned his head to look at them.*
*The only way to describe what he felt was jealousy-- towards the child and Adrienne. That scene seemed so idyllic and utterly unattainable that it filled him with a vague sense of rage... and sadness.*
*He fully turned and stood there gazing at them wistfully. As far as he knew, past, present nor future held that sort of peace and normality no matter how much he wanted it. All he could do was watch and wish and somehow, he found peace in that.*

*When she finally seemed to remember he was there, she beamed and picked Henri up properly and began moving in his direction. She softly talked at the baby until she reached Chuck.*
"Chuck, meet my godson, David Michel Dupont." *She said, smiling and holding the gurgling baby up.*

*All Chuck did was give a curt nod. Then he turned and walk inside, tipping the rest of the wine in the glass into his mouth.*

*She stood there blinking for a second--this she would address after Rose had left. In the meantime, she followed Chuck inside and sat at the kitchen table, holding David in one arm and signing with one hand. Rose did the same, minding the food and signing somehow simultaneously. Every so often Adrienne would laugh softly, or tend to the baby with a gentle hand and voice.*
*Dinner was ready soon, and Rose left with the baby, leaving Adrienne and Chuck alone with duck, potatoes, and a small bowl of glazed carrots. Adrienne couldn't help but smile at the carrots.*
