*After arriving just yesterday afternoon at the Chateau, Adrienne sat out on the front lawn, under a tree. She was cooing down at Rose's three-month-old son, David, who she'd taken charge of for the afternoon. Enjolras was inside, carrying out some business correspondence or other.*

*Chuck arrived later in the afternoon, sporting a pair of aviator sunglasses (historical correctness be damned), a crisp white cotton shirt and khakis. His valet had tagged along and as soon as the fiacre stopped, Chuck sauntered towards the chateau and he went out to get his bags.*
*Once inside, he took off his sunglasses and took a look around. He rather liked what he saw.*

*It was then Adrienne finally came back inside, holding the baby in one arm and letting him suck on her finger from the hand of the other. She smiled.*
"Welcome to the Chateau le Mont Epinguet."

"Cozy," *he said with a grin.*
*Chuck eyed the kid. He wasn't much of a baby person but babies always commanded attention.*
"That isn't yours, is it?" *he joked.*

"What, I didn't tell you about my sordid affair and bastard child?" *She laughed.* "No, no, he's Rose's son, David. Shall I have someone show you to your room?"
*She bounced the baby gently, completely at ease.*

*Chuck made a 'nah' face.*
"Why don't you just show me?"
*He didn't sound suggestive for a change. Just casual.*

"Right then, follow me..."
*She led him up the stairwell, down the hall, and to a bright, airy room that overlooked the front lawn.*
"I trust it's satisfactory?"
*His valet was already in here, unpacking into the large, light-colored wood armoire.*

"I've been in worse," *he said, sarcastically, with a cheeky grin.*
*He went over and stood in front of the window, looking down at the front lawn. Things were strangely quiet.*

*Adrienne quietly handed David off to his mother as she passed, turning back to Chuck once Rose had passed.*
"It's strange, after the noise of Paris, isn't it?"

*He went on gazing at everything.*
"You think Paris is loud, you should check out New York," *he said, remembering the planes, cars and buses he had gotten so used to.*
*He turned to her and nodded.*
"It is strange... but in a good way. Haven't had quiet like this in a while."

*She chuckled softly.*
"My ears always ring the first few days. Some nights, if you listen closely, you can hear the ocean."

"And how far away is that?"

"About half an hour by carriage, if the weather's good. We have a cottage in Carteret."

"Maybe tomorrow," *he said to himself, half in thought.*
"You know, I used to go to a place like this during the summers in New York."

"Really?"
*In her head she was already planning a picnic.*
