"Called the Hamptons."
*Jitneys, expensive shops, white parties, topless Brazilian chicks...*
*Chuck frowned.*
"Actually, come to think of it, it was nothing like this place."

*The closest sizable town was Cherbourg, a good hour away, and though there were summer parties at the other nearby chateaus (like that of the Desmarais family), really the region of Normandy where the family summered was quite idyllic. They came here to get away from society, not to have it come with them.*
*She laughed, sitting in a nearby chair.*
"Then why on earth did you say it?"

*Chuck sat on the window sill and laughed too.*
"I dunno. Summer, a small town, a beach. I guess geographically, it's much alike. But things were louder, wilder."

*Adi smiled.*
"Things tend to get quiet here. I mean, sometimes the Desmarais will host a summer party or two, and there are the occasional picnics with others, but the closest neighbors are really a half-hour carriage ride away."
*By neighbors, she meant those of their class and social circles, of course. Few affluent families had houses here--most of them were in the Loire river valley, where the family's other Chateau (much more grand) stood.*
"But it's nice, after being in Town so many months."

*Chuck grew pensive and a few moments of silence preceded very uncomfortable words.*
"Look, I know I left things... in a bit of a mess a few weeks ago but if you don't mind, maybe we can go down to that beach one of these days."

*She merely nodded. It wasn't in her to hold a grudge against him.*
"I'll have Coralie get together a picnic basket. Any day is fine--we don't really plan things when we're up here."

*He nodded.*
"Well, I'm going to get changed. A few hours in a carriage doesn't leave your clothes exactly prim and pressed. I figure I should look presentable for your father as well."

*She smiled and stood.*
"I'll leave you, then."
*She paused when she was near the door and turned.*
"And I am glad. That you came."
*With that, she turned and left.*

*Chuck grinned at her words.*
*His valet had finished unpacking and putting everything where it should be so he dismissed him and changed into something more appropriate for the house.*
