"Canada promises to be a land of great opportunity, I find," said Willoughby.

"As have I," Darcy agreed, but he could not resist pressing on. Though he would not delve too deeply into this gentleman's business. "Does opportunity bring you here, sir?"

"Of one sort or another, yes," said Willoughby. "I'm rather keen to establish myself as an independant gentleman. Though I am fond of my aunt, being rather at her mercy does not suit me. I am of age, and of some means, and it may be prudent to try and make my fortune without so much of her interferance."

This, of course, could not help but put Darcy on the alert.
It was not that he desired to automatically think ill of people, but the man reminded him too much of Wickham. Ambition, without the temperance of wisdom. And Darcy well knew how many such men sought to make their fortunes. That he himself now "worked" for a living did not escape him, and it was true that there was little marriageable opportunity in Avonlea. But neither was there any business.
"Independence is often to be desired," Darcy agreed. "One does not wish to have one's life dictated for him."

"Indeed. And what agreeable dictation for a young man's life could come from a dowager aunt?" said Willoughby with a grin.

That, at least, was something Darcy could relate to, though as he was not dependent on Lady Catherine for anything he was in little danger from her machinations. Further, his current "disgrace" would have cooled her ambitions for Anne as far as he was concerned.
He nodded his understanding. "Of course," he said. "I well understand the issue." To press it further was no business of his, of course. That was Willoughby's own. "I wish you good luck in your endeavor."

"I thank you, Mr. Darcy," said Willoughby with a bow. "Excuse me, I have interrupted your business. You must be a busy man. I will bid you good day."

"I am delighted to make the acquaintance of all my patrons," he said, returning the bow. "But I wish you a pleasant day, Mr. Willoughby."
