Darcy sat forward attentively.
"I would not go so far as Mrs. Lynde," he said. "Conversation with you is always pleasant, Miss Shirley, and never a waste of my time. But you have your own day to attend to, and as you say, I have work to be done, here." As much as he regretted it, she was right. "I appreciate your help. Please consider what I asked, about the gala."

*Anne nodded.*
"I will, Mr. Darcy. Anything I can do for you. To help. Anything I can do to help."
*She stood, brushing some lint from her skirt distractedly.*

Darcy assumed she must have been anxious about some matter back at Green Gables. It would explain her fluster somewhat. He rose, and offered his arm. "May I call the hotel's carriage for you?"

"Oh, it's no trouble to me to walk," *she said quickly, reddening slightly.* "I...thank you, that is, but...really...I'm fond of walking."

"I can well believe that. No better exercise, I think," he said. It became her well, he thought; he had merely been extending the courtesy. "And it is a fine day, in the bargain. A good day to you, Miss Shirley. Thank you."

"You're most welcome. Good day, Mr. Darcy." *She bowed her head briefly in courtesy, and departed with a grin.*

Darcy watched after her for a moment, until she was out of sight. Then he shook his head, remonstrating himself silently for his foolishness and reminding himself of her friendship. It had been hard won, and it was valuable to him, and he would be an idiot to endanger it in any way.

**AS GEORGIANA**
She'd noted the English gentleman staying with them, of course. One could hardly avoid it, as handsome and active as he was. But she was not so susceptible to such things as she once was, and largely Georgiana ignored him aside from the polite nod now and then.
She was glad to see Anne visit. Knowing her brother still held some feelings for her that he would own, even to her, she stayed out of their way, and now was collecting flowers in the garden.

*Willoughby trod softly upon the paths as he became aware of the young lady's presence, never wishing to startle her.*
"Good afternoon, miss," *he said, touching the brim of his hat with courty grace about his manners.* "Please allow me to introduce myself as it seems wrong that we pass so often and yet we are not made known to one another. John Willoughby, at your service."

*GEORGIANA*
Georgiana looked up, smiling with uncomplicated politeness. There was something open about her face that had not altered with her experience with Wickham, even if it had left her even more reserved.
"Good afternoon," she replied. Darcy should be there to introduce them, but lately, things had been different. Running the hotel made certain things less formal, and certain things more. "Georgiana Darcy. My brother owns this hotel."
She curtsied, thinking that while Fitzwilliam would always represent the absolute pinnacle of manners as far as she was concerned, there was something specially elegant in Willoughby's.

"Charmed, Miss Darcy. Indeed, your brother's hotel is a sheer delight from first to last. I had not expected my stay in Canada to be so congenial."

Georgiana's eyes glowed at the praise for her brother.
"He does a marvelous job," she agreed without any hint of modesty on his behalf. Indeed, she thought Darcy too modest, sometimes. "I shall have to tell him you said so," she continued. "Sometimes I think he doesn't listen to me when I tell him myself."

"What a poor and unfortunate man to be so immune to such charm as can be found in your opinions, Miss Darcy. On the other hand, one might envy his freedom...I cannot claim to be above being enraptured."

*GEORGIANA*
"Oh!" Georgiana flushed delicately, her first instinct embarrassed flattery, but then almost immediately she thought of Wickham and that summer and recalled that this gentleman hardly knew her. Didn't know her at all.
She did not immediately set her mind against his character, for it was not her way. But she had learned enough to be somewhat suspicious, of herself as much as anyone. She knew enough to know she was susceptible to charm, even if she sometimes was still overwhelmed by it. And she thought about Anne Shirley, a girl who really did have opinions worth airing.
"Sir, a man must make up his own mind about opinions," she said, stuttering slightly which rather ruined the effect she was going for. "Mine are by no means always correct; though they are in this matter, I assure you. My brother would not let rapture sway his, of that I am certain."

"Of course--" *said Willoughby with a short bow.* "Your brother seems a gentleman most set in his ways and opinions. He is certain of everything, lucky fellow."
