"Raspberries!" He said rapturously, spying a tray with fruit on it. It appeared the Enjolrases had overordered on food, and there were several untouched trays. In another corner of the room (a small sitting room that had been converted for the purpose) stood the cases of wine.

Sebastian would never have gotten into a case of wine - not at a stranger's, anyway - but fruit-trays he had little issue with.
"Really oh delightful," he said in almost one breath. "We have the best briar patches back home - but they are picky about who they let in sometimes and also don't always like to let you go. Best to get berries at parties - " He popped on into his mouth and then held up another for Andrew with a look of excited and childlike food-bliss.

He took it and ate it, smiling. "They're my favorite. Strawberries are almost always too bland or too sweet, and blueberries are too tart." He rather wondered why 'they' should care who picked from the berry patch. He'd never had experience with such things, however, as there were no particularly productive berry bushes at Richmond.

"I like them all madly but strawberries are firmest. After that I suppose I'd have to say I prefer blackberries."
'They' had referred to the thorns.

"Blackberries are nice." With that he grabbed one of those, hoping it wouldn't stain his fingers. "Nana says there are strawberry patches at Manderley, but I haven't been there in ages."

"Then it must be heaven, or a relative. When were you last there? It must have been a long while if you've managed to forget the strawberries."

"Oh I was very little--baby-little. She always comes up to Wilcombe to see us when we visit, but I think it's because she gets lonely in the house. Nobody's ever really there anymore, since she's usually up with Uncle Liam and Aunt Sorcha lately."

"Uncle Liam and Aunt Sorcha went to Wilcombe to raise Kat, because Grandfather and Nana were still living at Manderley with Mother. Grandfather died a few years ago, and now she stays with Uncle Liam most of the time."

"I hope you will forgive me, this is a lot of names," said Sebastian contritely. "Who lives at Manderley now? Only Mamma and Nanny live at Brideshead."

"I suppose nobody. I'll live there one day, since Uncle Liam and Aunt Sorcha will stay at Wilcombe, but for now... nobody lives there."
It made him sad to think of a house with no-one in it. He had grown up in a house rowdy with laughter and people. He ate another strawberry.

Sebastian grew a little bit quiet out of respect for the house, in thought, and also because he was eating something at the moment. "If it were later and I had had more, I would probably weep, wouldn't you?" he said sincerely.

"Empty houses are just very sad. All the furniture and lovely paintings covered up."

"So much of Brideshead is like that now," said Sebastian, his voice edged in melancholy the way certain things are gilded. "So much of it isn't used anymore and is all dusty. We have our own little church there, you know? And it's had to be closed now, because of funds."

"Really? Manderley hasn't got a chapel." The farmland around Manderley, as well as several factories and intelligent investments had kept the family well afloat. "They say there used to be lovely parties there..."
