"I should brush up on my rather rusty French, then," *he said with that crooked smile.*

"I'm sure it can't be that bad... one of my cousins married an Englishman, and every time they visit it's absolutely impossible to understand them."
*The butler entered and bowed.*
"Dinner is served."

*Chuck rose and moved into the dining room with the rest of them. Silverware, candles, china. The whole nine yards. He was quite impressed but, of course, didn't quite show it. He again waited for the two of them to be seated before he sat down. With table manner bred into him since he was three, he felt quite at home.*

"Have you engaged a cook yet, Monsieur Bass?" *Enjolras inquired.* "Ours is quite the best in the city and has friends who come highly recommended."

"My... interior designed, Blanche, recommended one to me during a... meeting, but I'd trust your judgment over her's," *he said, purposely emphasizing certain words for the girl more than the Vicomte.*

*Adrienne raised an eyebrow. She was quite aware.*
"Interior designer? Someone can be hired to decorate?" *Enjolras asked. He'd of course grown up in a world where if the lady of the house didn't decorate, it was expected that the hired housekeeper could.*

"She's a bit ahead of her time, if you will, with a very good eye. I've come to trust her judgment," *he said as he spread the napkin over his lap.* "Worth every penny."

"It is hard to find good staff lately. All of them have gone out to Vienna or someplace like that for the imperial court."
*Adrienne chuckled softly at her father*
"Papa, nobody wants to hear you whine about how there aren't any good servants in France these days."
*He smiled and patted her hand.* "An excellent point; and here comes the soup."

*The food was exceptional and they all exchanged good conversation. Well, it was mostly Chuck and the Vicomte spoke but he made sure to pay equal attention to the girl with his eyes. As insane as she was, she wasn't all that bad to look at.
After the courses, the butler brought out a bottle of brandy and three snifters. Brandy wasn't exactly his choice of drink but it was alcohol and he had to resist the urge to demand than the usual amount poured.*
"May I ask your daughter how old she is or would she be insulted?" *he asked.*

"A lady never..." *Adrienne began, but Enjolras interrupted.*
"Seventeen. Going on thirty."
"Papa!" *She playfully whacked his shoulder with her fan, laughing.* "Do excuse my boorish father."

*He laughed at his remark but the smile slowly disappeared.*
"He's not boorish," *he said before taking a sip. His tone suggested that he knew what boorish really was.*

*With that Adrienne took a healthy sip of brandy. It wasn't exactly normal for a girl to join in the after-dinner drinks, but then the Enjolras family wasn't exactly normal.*
"So do you intend to stay in Paris long?" *Enjolras finally asked, managing to end the awkward silence.*

"Why not? I like what I see," *he said as a polite compliment. As much as he would've loved to innuendo everything he said to her just to make her uncomfortable, he didn't exactly want to get killed by her father.*

"Something about Paris. She draws you in, makes you one of her own." *Enjolras mused.* "Those who leave always come back."

"I can see why. With fair, virtuous women such as your daughter in the city, Paris seems to be a beacon of hope for mankind elsewhere."
*He lifted his snifter to her. Again, he sounded quite genuine but really, he just wanted to see her get really awkward.*
