Farinelli stepped out of his carriage, smiled warmly to the coachmen as he paid him as though he were a quaint attraction, and touched the brim of his hat to him with a violet-gloved hand before turning to the Opera. He was unsure how he felt about this, but he appeared very mild and unassuming even for a well-dressed gentleman strolling up to the Opera House in broad daylight. And he was very much convinced that that was what he was. Even though he was a performer, there was no difference in his mind between the Farinelli on the stage and the Carlo Broschi off it, and likewise little difference between what he appeared to be and what he really was. Farinelli might have acted, but if he did, he was the last to know.
Stepping into the foyer, he felt somewhat overwhelmed by the grandeur of this place, and his steps showed his awe, slow and almost timid. He did not doubt he could measure up to it, but it was, nonetheless, very new. It seemed to be mostly empty at the moment, a few plainly-dressed people that he did not really notice milling around, and he walked up to a glorious, nude sculpture on the staircase slowly, pulling off one of his gloves with his teeth and reaching out with a hesitant hand to stroke the curve of its leg.

Ghislain was returning from disentangling himself from a rather sticky though ingeniously pleasurable situation in the cloakroom, if one takes the meaning, with every intention to head jauntily up the stairway and into the rehearsal room, and as such had occasion to pass through the Foyer.
But Ghislain was almost entirely incapable of passing by another human being without making comment, particularly not one that looked particularly delicious in nature and who was fondling a statue of a naked female (privately, he was of the opinion that no one could resist commenting on things such as that), and so paused behind the gentleman he took note of and spoke, placing a hand on his hip. "A little higher up, dear. That's a good man."

Carlo was taken very much by surprise and glanced behind him, hand slipping down the sculpture rather than upward, although he did not remove it, for he was not self-conscious about where he placed his person, no matter what shape the statue was carved into; such an action lent itself easily to the idea that it was until unconscious, this removal.
He took in the gentleman speaking in a moment - although a moment later it occurred to him that he was hardly a gentleman, his attire much too rumpled and informal for such a title. Rather than purse his lips in thought, Farinelli parted them, peering over him. "I place my hand where I intend to. If I intended it to be higher...it would be higher." His voice was soft and a bit high, in an almost boyish fashion, rather than an effeminate or feminine one. His tone was almost angelic, and he lifted his eyebrows, appearing to be waiting for something.

The actions were boring, they didn't interest him. But the words!...ah, this man should know better than this. But then, of course he shouldn't, for he didn't know him. Fully aware that he was harrassing what looked like a well-off patron of the place of his employment, Ghislain reached out and traced his hand over the man's hip, lips forming a sensuous pout.
"As do I."

Farinelli turned back swiftly and elegantly - a motion natural to him; there was nothing put on or affected in his ease of movement - at the fluttering touch, tilting his head as though terribly shocked, although he wasn't really.
"Forgive me if I seem a pederast," said Farinelli, not sounding sorry, or mocking, but not sounding much as though he cared, either. There might have been an element of superiority in that, in the implication that he was sorry for the boy's sake that he wasn't one, but one would have to be overly suspicious of him, and who would suspect him? He had the face of a choirboy, and that wasn't altogether dishonest.

"I do," said Ghislain, swallowing a smile and taking another step forward, reaching a hand out to rest it on the statue's voluptuous breast and lean against it. This sort of posture wasn't unnatural for him at all, nor was the ostentatious hand placement. Besides, the cupped shape of the breast was quite the perfect place to lay one's hand over. Unlike the gentleman, who had touched the statue tentatively yet without self-awareness, Ghislain was very conscious of the implications and behaved as he did deliberately. "In fact," he said, lowering his voice conspiratorially, eyes flickering up to the other man's, "I believe it's not to my displeasure."

Farinelli tapped the gentleman in the knee with his cane, not rudely, but rather detachedly, as though a doctor poking him for study, eyes falling over him momentarily before he gathered up his sight and looked back into the man's eyes with an air of defiance.
"Surely, though," he said, as though offering, but with a fine layer of distaste, "there are things that are?"

Ghislain took a step back, removing his hand as though surprised by the pale fire he found. In a moment, however, he had reached his hand out and gripped the man's cane very suddenly. Instead of trying to wrest it away, he slid his hand upwards until the curve of his palm touched the other man's, and then he softly closed his hand around his.
"Not many."

Farinelli was taken aback by this. It was not the worst thing that had happened to him, and really he would not normally had minded terribly save for the abnormal disrespect; but he was new to Paris and did not know the man, and therefore could not entirely demand that everyone have heard of Farinelli.
Although still! Even though this did seem rather obviously done for Farinelli's discomfort, rather than meant in seriousness, it was overdone and offended his sensibilities - ruffled his feathers, at the least.
"It's safest to cease seeking for new things, then," said Farinelli, still in that soft, gentle voice, prying the man's hand off his with his other hand. "Lest you find a disappointment."

Ghislain was determined to unsettle him; this was too, too amusing. He reached up his newly-removed hand and stroked the man's face - hairless as a baby, good God - then seized his cravat with two hands and adjusted it with an informality suggesting great intimacy.
"Who cares for safe?"

Words that had been spoken to him bubbled up through his mind to the surface, but Farinelli, only parting his lips as though startled, a mute cry, did not give in to the pull of memory. He posed with his hand holding his cane and the other lifted to the stairway railing, head tilted almost imperiously - again looking more scholarly than anything else - and gazed on the man detachedly. He did not object to being touched, even if it was not precisely comfortable. His person did not really seem to be his own personal possession to him.
"The goodliest of persons, so I'm told," he said almost coldly, although he was incapable of sounding cold; it was only in the eyes, the movement of the pink lips. "Although if you are not of their number..." He turned his head again, brushing hair off his neck and onto his shoulder with one deft hand. "And I happen to be mostly safe myself. So you see, you might take your attentions elsewhere."

"I might," said Ghislain, moving his hands to the man's hips and leaning forward, using his own haughty posture for leverage and tilting his head. There was a certain flexibility to his movement that was, while still sensual, not quite sexual to it, giving one the impression that he might be a created thing.
He licked his lips before speaking unrealizingly. "But I never do, you see."

Farinelli took a careful and deliberate step backwards, moving a step higher, and did it swiftly enough that he hoped it would knock him quite off-balance. He did not speak, but looked down at him with an expression of contemplative consternation.

Had they been on a flat surface, the motion would likely have knocked Ghislain off balance; as it was, it did unsettle him a little, but as he had moved higher it also did not disrupt him nearly as much.
"Trying to knock me to my knees?" queried Ghislain, almost board, carefully leaning back and flicking the gentleman in the nose with a fingertip. "Devil take you, you can't wait for a cloakroom or something?" He sounded bored and indifferent, but his eyes glittered.

The flicking Farinelli did not at all take to, that was plain, although the fact that it took him off guard was a good thing; he might have knocked the cane into the man's torso if he'd thought it would help, had he known what to expect.
"I am a person of infinite patience," said Farinelli, sounding gentle, tilting his head back and taking one more step upwards. He was taller than the other man and did not think escaping him would be altogether that difficult.
