Ghislain leaned heavily against the railing, though there remained, as always, a great deal of lightness in him that he could never have suppressed, though he did suppress his smile, just barely, before giving into the inclination and smiling, teeth feral.
"But I do test it, don't I?" It was said like a statement.

Farinelli tilted his head as though trying to increase the space in his throat for sound to come out of. He cleared his throat softly, eyes wide and clear in an innocent fashion.
"Oh, you do," he said, almost as though in wonderment. He placed the cane's tip against the man's chest and pushed very hard, very sharply. Then he turned and walked up the stairs to the auditorium without affectation or even triumph in his steps.

Ghislain took a gasping breath automatically and fell backwards. He caught himself, but he was breathing unevenly, having a hard time of it at first. He clutched at the railing for support and looked up at the man as he left through his hair, wearing a rather ugly expression, teeth gritted.
It was going to have left a bruise there on his solar plexus. Before it faded about a dozen people would have seen it, would have known that some gentlemen had beat him back like a dog.
Ghislain was one for sticking to first impressions, and he would bear a grudge about this for some time.
