"Ain't no such thing!" *She called back, just before catching the pie. She watched sticky chunks tumble down onto her dress.*
"Oh, and I sup'ose that was too, right?"
*The ladle was quickly refilled.*

"Yer damn right!"
*Lizzie stood, ladle discarded and (gripping the sides of the dish tightly) flung its slimy contents straight at Jake.*
*Now that much sloshing caught Lark's attention and she averted her eyes to Jake with a wince, her own follies forgotten for the moment.*

*Jake's head was a mask of dripping white gravy. He exhaled, blowing an opening in the sheen of slime.*
"Nice. Real nice."

*Lizzie just cocked her hip indignantly and set the dish on the table, as if no sin had been committed in her eyes.*
"Well I didn't start it." *She answered, as if that exonerated her completely.*

"Nor did I!" *protested Jake.* "That was KIP'S bread n' butter!"
*He looked over at his brother, who paused and shrugged.*
"Never said mah aim was good," *he muttered.*

*Lizzie looked a little apologetic. At least until her eyes settled on Kip in a matronly fashion that let him know he was in it deep. Chunks of pie still clung at her, occasionally plopping to the floor as she scowled at him.*
"Kip..." *She growled.*
*Lark shrunk down a little in her chair. She seemed to have fared better than those two, though there was potato in her hair and stains on her dress.*
"Sorry." *She squeaked softly.*

"Warn't yer fault, Lark," *said Jake, trying to scrub the gravy from his eyes so he could see.*

*Lark pursed her lips, still feeling a bit chastised. But she managed to stand and napkin in hand, she hurried to Jake's side, crouching next to him and wiping at the mess.*
"Well Kip?" *Lizzie said condescendingly.* "What'cha got to say fer yerself?"

*Kip stuffed a forkful in his mouth.*
"Shmmah," *he mumbled.
Jake grinned at Lark as she helped him clean up.*
"Thanks, darlin'."

*Lizzie did not look amused.*
"Well then, 'ya might see to gettin' this place cleaned up a bit." *She continued, knowing full well she'd still have a chunk of the load. She nodded to Jake curtly.*
"Sorry 'bout the mess."
*Lark had managed to get most of the gravy off his face, but there was still quite a bit in his hair and on his clothing.*
"Don't suppose ya'll got a tub in here." *She whispered softly.*

"Nah...all the heated water's for washin' up the dishes, anyway," *said Jake with a shrug.* "I'll mosey on over to the pump."
*He stood up and went to the backyard pump, working the handle and sticking his head under the spout to catch the freezing blast of water, scrubbing at his face and hair with the other hand until all traces of the gravy were gone and he was soaking wet, instead.*

*Lark had followed dutifully, trying to help as much as he would let her, wincing at the sight of him sopping wet. Not taking quite the same approach, she did what she could to wash her face and neck, resigning herself that the dress would just have to be properly laundered. The water was could though and it brought a pink glow to her cheeks.*
"Don't suppose we'll be warmin' up any time soon." *She smiled sheepishly as she rubbed her arms. The night air caught the moisture and she shivered slightly. Though, she figured, things were much worse for Jake.*

*Jake stepped closer, wrapping his arms around her gently to shield her from the breeze, seeing the bumps raised on her smooth skin by the breeze in the dying light of day.
Clatter and chatter drifted from the kitchen where Jamie and Kip hamhandedly attempted to help tidy up as quickly as possible so they could beat it from the house for the night and leave the lovebirds by their lonesome.*
"Sooner than y'think," *he murmured huskily, resting his hands on her hips and drawing her close against his body. He suddenly felt so hot he thought it a wonder his damp clothes didn't start steaming then and there.*

*It was a comfort, him holding her like that, and she tried to savor it.*
"You really think so?" *She asked, levity in her voice though she was still trembling.*
"I'm 'fraid it was quite a mess."
*She pressed her face to his chest, nuzzling it apologetically.*
"Didn't mean to start that, I just...I was tryin' to be respectable. Really."
