He laughed "Sounds like my kind of guy" leaning back he blew a line of smoke up in to the sky "everyone was an artist where I come from though. We were all there to change the world through some form of expression. Well everyone else was, I just drove a cab."

*Adrienne laughed, a quiet sound that bubbled just beneath the surface.*
"Which one? The barricade-builder or the free spirit?" *She'd always thought Papa's approach to changing the world more practical than Nicki's.*

"The free spirit" he laughed "but I was a barricade builder, but not by choice. Uncle Sam called my birthday and there I was thrust in to the very war that had killed my sisters first boyfriend and that all my friends were protesting."
Max's face was slightly pale at the mention of it, but he still smiled "What good does violence do? Other than deprive a lot of mothers from watching their sons grow?"

"In a different era, my father would have been of the same opinion. But as it is... the parents of his generation had known the American and French revolutions. The only way he knew to throw off the shackles of oppression was to fight, and fight he did. It all just depends on perspective."
*But at the remembrance of mothers, she stiffened.* "And some mothers don't care much eith..." *But she stopped herself and tried to keep her face composed as she went back to grading an essay, glaring furiously at it.*

He watched her a moment "Hey you okay?"

"Just... mothers. I'm not a fan." *She said shortly, beginning to regain control of her attitude.*

"I'd have to agree with you, but I've got no good reason not to like em" he chuckled trying to lighten up the situation "mine just did what a good housewife was suppose to do."

*She wrinkled her nose.* "Eugh. The very idea of putting myself under the thumb of some fop with more spit than sense..." *She put her papers aside and held her hair up, in a simulation of a proper updo. Suddenly her voice was simpering and her eyes were wide and frankly frightening.*
"Yes Eustace, of course Eustace dearest, would you like me to bring you your slippers and your coffee and read your evening paper and chew your food for you Eustace?" *Her opinion of the average Victorian housewife was quite clear.*
"And all the while him philandering with maids and mistresses and sometimes the second footman." *All this was decidedly good-humored, though, which was a nice change from angry. Given, she was an angry virgin with distance issues.*

Max snorted "I couldn't agree with you more, women should be told that they can aspire to more than that."

*She let go of her hair and picked up the papers.*
"Yes, and in avoiding marriage I end up grading papers." *She laughed, looking down at them and taking back up the red pen.*

"At least your not stuck in some loveless relationship with someone you barely know just for the sake of good social behavior."
He knew enough from the classes he'd taken to understand 19th century relationships.

"Ah but you see there's the catch: I'm not in any sort of relationship with anyone. Society frowns on a girl who won't conform, and though it appears to be different where you come from, there aren't too many who believe otherwise."

*Victorian sensibilities and training as a teacher prevailed.*
"Excuse me!"

He lifted up his hands "Woah, woah look I haven't been able to control that just yet. Give me a break."
