Alex leaned over to [whoever wants to answer].
"They're... both really good," she murmured, a little surprised.

Maleo smirked, leaning back toward the little redhead, keeping his eyes on the pair.
"The other fellow," he started, not knowing the man's name was Julian. "Seems well trained... El Castro looks to be singing out of desperation." At the last bit, he chuckled, listening well to when his cue was to begin. He had a bit to wait before his part, even if they were not singing with the chorus.

"Well, he's better than when he was singing out of having nothing to do until his next meal," she muttered."

Maleo snickered and covered his mouth, absorbing that tidbit about Castro's arrogance for later. He believed he was starting to like the little Irish (he guessed) woman, and would have to avoid playing his games with her - for now.
Until his cue, however, he would just wait while the exchange between Faust and Mephistopheles brought up Wagner's part.

*Julian's voice shifted, that tiny smile of promise curling the outer corner of his lips.*
"Very well! Very well! I can satisfy your whims. I can satisfy your whims."
*As the words resonated, there was an underlying whisper of...something. Dark and wanton. An offer and an oath.*

Carlos' eyes moved unwillingly to watch Julian, and what he saw--what he heard--disturbed him.
This was not the Mephistopheles he was used to. This was not a pantomime. He had called the devil, and the devil had come. Or rather, that had been Erik's doing, but he was caught in it now. No, he did not think this was the same thing. But it put him in mind of it, and made the role he was playing as frightfully appropriate as it was disturbing. He fervently wished he could go back to a time when he had not cared, and when opera was just fiction.
He continued the scene ("And what will I give you in return?"), neither master stopping them. Desperate he perhaps was, but it was Faust's desperation, too.

Maleo braced himself on his heels, ready at coming out as Wagner. He planned to not go through so many theatrics as he would in a regular performance. They were only a couple lines away now, and he took a few steps toward the stage, ready to make his entrance as Wagner and totally make Castro even more nervous than before.

*Julian's voice softened slightly, offering reprieve in a moment of temptation, not for what he was giving, but for what he was holding back. As if for the cost of Castro's soul, he would never sing again. If only if was given willingly.*
"Almost nothing; almost nothing; Here, I am at your service, But, there, you will be at mine!"

((Because one supposes one should put in an appearance))
Destler arrived a bit late, in his usual place in the flies, and was quite shocked to see Julian in the role of the devil on the stage below him. Certainly uncomfortable for Carlos...a bit disconcerting. He had no doubt that the boy's "mother" had put him up to this, but to what end? It was very suspicious, and he supposed he would have to have work with Julian later, when he could.
There was Maleo as well, and Destler was curious to hear his voice in a non-novelty setting, to make the determination to tutor the young man or not.

*Christine listened with interest. It was good to see the opera finally investing as much care with male voices as with female, and whatever Castro was like as a person, he was certainly talented.
As for the mysterious man playing Mephistopheles...something about him was familiar, though Christine couldn't quite put her finger on what.*

Carlos had never heard a Mephisto laden his words with the sort of promises Julian seemed to be. He approached their duet with some trepidation:
On the way! For me (you) pleasures, The young maidens For me (you) their caresses, For me (you) their desires! For me (you) energy, powerful instincts, And wild orgies of the heart and senses! Ardent youth, to me your (you its) desires, To me (you ) your (its) intoxication, To me (you) your (its) pleasures! To me (you ) your (its) intoxication, To me (you) your (its) pleasures! To me (you ) your (its) intoxication, To me (you) your (its) pleasures!
He ended with a gasp not altogether due to his breath control, and tried to focus on Maleo's entrance rather than the oddity of this group of people, brought together, and the secrets they all harbored.

Maleo made his entrance, hoping he would be supplied with some supporting chorus (or a stand-in for such) as he made his way in as Wagner; the malice and snide behavior was tucked away for now - he had a role to play.

Christopher's performance was clearly directly influenced by Julian's presence and he would again have to remind his not-quite-lover not to strive to hard at rehearsals.
As for the Spaniard--the real one--his voice was curiously improved and evoked suspicion and perhaps a touch of jealousy in the immortal composer.

Erik was pleased with Maleo's progress--the role had been transposed, which gave an odd cast to the part, but one could detect the deeper reaches possible.
And Julian, of course, was perfect. It amused Erik to note that Castro reacted to him--he would have to remind his son not to push that too far in performance, though the fact might prove useful to Erik's future plans.
The rehearsal continued.

*Xavier noted the tensions but said nothing, figuring it would be smartest just not to speak. He was at his job, and as such he would act the professional, even if these men found it hard. As there was no chorus now, Xavier waited for the pianist to play over that particular part and made his own entrance.*
"O, holy medal Which comes to me from my sister, On the day of battle, to guard against death, Stay on my heart."
*Good--even perhaps excellent--as always, though now that his range had been extended and he had the chance to use it, his whole presence had a different tone to it. Somewhat more subdued.*
((... oh but I wish we were doing this in French because the English translation makes me want to shoot someone.))
