Darla smirked at that. At least he knew where he stood.
"Why?" she replied in turn, affecting surprise and spreading her cloaked arms wide. "Why, it could make me money, of course! I know exploitable talent when I see it!"

Ned gaped at the uncanny similarity shared between Darla and Emerson. Was money their entire world? Was it all that mattered to them?
"Talent... sure," he shrugged.

Oh, money wasn't Darla's sole motivation. Her objective was staying on top, and what better way to do it than through money? Also, it did buy you the good things in life. Not, of course, that she would know about his partner.
She snickered. "So, what is it? Spill. C'mon. We can cut a deal." Boy, that was similar, was it not?

"I think that's for me to know and for you not to find out," Ned sniffed. "You wouldn't happen to know an Emerson Cod, by any chance?"

Darla frowned, and huffed slightly under her breath, the sound hissing through her front teeth. "Well, you obviously don't want to make money," she snorted in response, and shook her head.
On hearing the name, though, she snickered. "Emerson Cod? That's a stupid name. Who's he, the next contender to challenge Roosevelt?"

Ned winced and shut his eyes, imagining all too well Emerson's explosive reaction to her statement. If he were here, that is.
"Er, never mind, then. Oh, and it would appear that your pie is ready."
He shuffled over to the oven, mitts on, and cautiously removed the pie.

Darla shrugged. Whatever; whoever he knew was really of little consequence to her at the moment.
"Ah, excellent," she added, adjusting her scarf and hopping down. She watched the pie come out, licking her lips.

Ned removed his mitts and carefully slipped the pie into an elaborately designed box. He hastily did the ribbon and striding over, thrust it before Darla.
"Here you are."

In return, Darla scooped up the box, grinning at it, pleased by the design as much as any normal child.
"How much?"

"That'll be eight dollars."
Normally, Ned would have charged more for custom-made pies, but evidently, today was different. Agitated far beyond his usual limit, he was growing increasingly impatient for Darla to take her leave.

"Well, okay, then," she replied, noticing that he was agitated but choosing to act cheery and ignore it just to grate on his nerves.
Reaching into her purse, she fiddled around for a bit and came up with eight single bills, handing them to him--the newest was dated 1939, of course.

Ned frowned but accepted the money, tucking it away into the cash register.
"Well, thank you for your business. P-Please come again," he said with a forced smile.

Darla noted his frown, and it seemed to be caused by the money...oh, she got it. And she grinned even wider. Wouldn't this be entertaining, to see his reaction? What if he came running back to ask her? Well, she'd see.
"Oh, don't worry--I will."

"Okay, then. Good-bye," he stated hurriedly.
Was it too much to ask that Darla quickly leave the premises as soon as possible? The corners of his mouth twitched, still forcibly turned up in a grin.
