Ned hesitated, biting his lower lip in anxiety. He found that he was unable to prevent himself from speculating as to whether Darla had actually found out about his... ability.
"Let's get to your pie, shall we?" he said in a clearly agitated tone of voice.

She, of course, did not know precisely what it was, but she was an extremely bright girl (a pity she was insane), and could tell something was clearly up. She wouldn't rest until she found out what it was, either.
"Please."

Ned's thought processes immediately careened to a halt. Had his ears deceived him? Had the girl actually said what he'd thought she had said?
"What?" he asked, blinking.

Darla was startled herself for a moment on seeing his reaction to that. What had she said?
"Um...I said, 'please'. Please get to the pie. Just because I'm clearly far more important than you are doesn't mean that I don't have any manners. Or does it mean something special to you?" she added, raising an eyebrow.

Ned stood rooted to the spot, dumbstruck.
Manners? After this entire ordeal, she chose to retain her manners? Oh, two could play at this game.
"Well, of course that's what you meant," Ned replied with an air of nonchalance, flashing a cheery grin at Darla. He set off to busy himself about the kitchen, preheating the oven and vanishing into an adjacent storage room.
He returned with a basketful of ripe, sliced peaches.

When Darla wasn't being psychotic, she could indeed be quite charming. After all, one didn't climb to the top of the heap by being nasty to people in public--that rather turned opinion against you.
She smiled back, seeming sweet as ever, and watched the peaches he brought back with great interest from a seat which she took at a nearby table.

Ned slid on a pair of synthetic gloves and seized a spare baked pie shell from the countertop behind him. He eloquently poured in the cooled contents of the saucepan and afterwards, placed the peach slices in the mixture, dotting it all with a bit of butter. With the top crust in place and slits made, Ned added a dash of sugar on the surface.
He snapped off his gloves, put on a mitt, and finally slipped the pie into the oven.
"Lovely."

Darla watched, her mouth actually watering as she watched the pie made and saw it put in the oven. She had always been a sucker for pastry, after all, and though she wasn't bad at cooking herself, she could never quite get them right.
"Looking good," she confirmed.

An uncomfortably heavy silence fell upon them, broken only by the rhythmic ticking of the clock hanging on a wall beside Ned. He rocked to and fro on his feet, arms clasped behind his back.
"So..."
He couldn't help but wonder: what exactly did you converse about with an individual who had almost murdered you?

She, however, didn't seem bothered by the silence, her hands at her lap on her purse and her unusually small feet clicking. She didn't know quite how to talk to him now, but she had no worries--after all, nobody was ever going to find out about this.
Taking off the glasses, she eyed first the oven, then him.
"You still haven't told me why."

Ned fidgeted and stood with toes facing inward.
"Is it really such a terrible thing that I help people by investigating these cases?"

Darla shook her head, but kept her eyes focused on him, scheming.
"Terrible? No, not in general...but what is it that requires you to see their remains? C'mon, tell me..." She wasn't going to take no for an answer, especially not when she thought she could make money off of it.
Money--that was it! "Hmm, a big secret, huh? How much to spill it?"

Ned swallowed hard and situated a hand on the countertop to steady himself.
"There's actually quite a lot you can learn from a body," he answered, carefully wording his response. "And you can't put a price to the expression of gratitude on clients' faces when the person responsible for their misery is caught. Or better, locked away safely behind bars."

Now Darla could tell he was nervous, just making her more curious, and she leaned forward, slipping the sunglasses back on.
"Oh, is that so?" she replied, somewhat disappointed, and shook her head. To the second comment she raised an eyebrow. "Ah. Well, that's a good thing, then, as you shouldn't hope to make any money off anything you've just seen..."

"Nope," he agreed with a rapid shake of his head.
"My turn. Why are you so curious about me and corpses?"
