*Rochester's face grew haughty.*
"Is that so? Careful, child or I'll be forced to take you over my knee and teach you some respect."
*His brows bounced, suddenly suggestive.*

"But I cooked!" she pouted. "Still... I did burn them," she ventured.

*He considered her carefully.*
"That's true..." *Rochester arched a suspicious brow.*
"I'm starting to think that the thought doesn't trouble you as much as you want me to think it does."

Shadi's eyes widened.
"Oh, I'm troubled!" she said. "Your treatment of me is reprehensible. I don't know how I let you get away with it."

"Mmmhmmm." *Rochester didn't look convinced.*
"Perhaps your mind is going. Maybe you should be committed." *He wiped his mouth and stood decisively.*
"Upstairs! Right now." *He pointed, his dimple betraying his charade.*

Rochester, dimpled and pancake-full, was not terribly commanding. But Shadi jumped to her feet, and after a moment, scampered up the stairs before him.

"That's my girl." *Rochester mumbled to himself, his smile undeniable. After a moment, he bounced up after her.*
((Meet you there.))

***NEW EVENING***
Nadir set out the dishes and utensils on the immaculate marble countertop, whistling happily to himself as he took meat and vegetables from the ice-box, surveying what he had and rummaging for spices and seasonings, even cutting some fresh herbs from a planter he'd had set up on the kitchen windowsill.

"You bastard!" Shadi cried, coming out of nowhere and belting Nadir quite soundly in the jaw.

Nadir took the hit with as much ease as he could, realizing it was not unexpected once he'd found it was Shadi beneath the wild hair and fog of cusses. Still, he wasn't about to sacrifice himself to what mild guilt he felt.
Tasting blood and hearing a strange ringing in his ears as his jaw sang with pain, he managed to recover from the blow somewhat--enough to catch his daughter's wrists before she could land another blow, using his body to pin her against the counter as best he could.
"Care to try discussing it?" he snarled, wanting to be calm and not succeeding at all. His entire face hurt like a bitch, now--it did not make him inclined to tenderness.

She felt a certain satisfaction at connecting so well, but her smugness was hidden under her rage. Thus pinned, she struggled like some cross between wildcat and eel, her green eyes flashing murderously.
"More words?" she spat. "Haven't you done enough?"

"Haven't I? Are you not once more back in the arms of the man you love?"
His gaze flickered downward for a moment.
"Rochester, I mean?" he said through his teeth.

Shadi reacted to this with an even more thrust-out chin of defiance.
"As if you even care!" she said. "Do you have any idea what that did to me? Do you have any idea what might have happened to me in that stat--what did happen? No, you didn't think about that, did you? Just having your fun as always."
She wriggled out from between him and the counter and crossed her arms over her chest, glaring.
"You are the worst father I've ever had!"

Edward lost everything after "the man you love," due to some very interesting thoughts crossing the mind of what he'd assumed was the man's daughter.
Edward had never more fervently wished for brain bleach, or some sort of telepathy-canceling headphones, but as it was he suddenly felt it was in far over his head.

"You didn't care enough to stay with him in the first place," he pointed out. "Left him without a word, as I heard it. A lesser man could well die under such circumstances. And you'd've let him die."
Nadir went to the ice-box and took out some ice, wrapping it in a dish-rag and pressing it to his jaw.
"Shadi, pain is what drags us into torpor, and goads us into action. You weren't feeling enough pain to go back to him as you ought. So I lied. I lied to your face."
He lowered the ice for a moment, his unblinking gaze narrowing.
"And don't tell me the pain you felt was on account of the lie. You felt your guilt. You saw yourself in a mirror--as you truly were. You knew, then, how things stood between you and Rochester. I'm not going to apologize."
Replacing the ice with a sigh, he went back to organizing his bell peppers with his free hand.
"Incidentally, I'm also the best father you've ever had, or ever will have."
