Nadir winced lightly, but bore Shadi's parting comment with generally good humour.
"Get out of my house before I call the gendarmes," he grumbled dryly.

Shadi saluted smartly, and dashed up to her room to pick up a few of her favorite things before dashing back out and back to Rochester, waiting for her (as she hoped) in his carriage...

*Rochester was pacing tightly outside the carriage. It felt strange being here, his home no longer. Hopefully Shadi wouldn't be too long.*

Shadi was a little longer than she'd expected, but when she returned she was much more herself, her expression intense but happy, with the adrenaline rush of the fight with her father, the make-up, and her telling off of Edward flooding her. She carried a small bag of essentials, tossing it into the carriage ahead of grabbing Rochester's hand with a carefree swing to her arm.

*Rochester smiled at the sight of her, but her relaxed attitude confused him. She seemed so different than when he'd seen her to the same steps not that long ago. She was livid (and rightly so.) He offered to help her into the carriage, his hand squeezing the one she'd given gently.*
"It...went well then?" *He queried cautiously.*
*He would send for his things later. They were not important. And if Nadir would not release them, it really mattered not. Rochester had the one thing that mattered safely away from that odd Persian.*

She almost laughed at his timid question, though not at him.
"Yes," she said. "We fought, I beat him quite soundly, he admitted his faults, I forgot to be angry anymore, and then I told off this sparkly boy who wants my dad's bod and won't leave him alone."
Which was a sight better than the first part of her day had been, so relatively, it was cause for celebration.
"He really is a terrible father, and I won't forgive him for telling me you were dead, but he's so... clueless. I just can't hate him altogether." She pouted, as if considering this a flaw in her personality.

"Oh." *Rochester answered, a bit plainly. It seemed so peculiar, but...to be honest, he just wasn't that sure of anything these days. Who was to say that this wasn't perfectly normal, but something in his mind made it otherwise? Or perhaps it was all just a figment to begin with. His jaw tightened and he pushed the thought back, climbing in after her.*
"Then you are merciful." *He concluded, a little unsure of things. Maybe this was too easy? Was that why it felt so strange?*

Shadi picked up, finally, on Rochester's mood and realized it did not match her own. And that she was the one out of place.
"I'm sorry," she said, sobering, her other hand laying gently on Rochester's arm. "I'm too flippant, aren't I? It's just... I've never been good at holding on to anger, or hurt, or... I couldn't afford it, Rochester. The things I've been through, I've seen other people wither from. Get bitter. I'm not saying I'm stronger. I'm saying that this is just how I am."
She squeezed his hand.
"The only thing that's lasted longer is the way I feel about you."

*Rochester seemed caught and tried to brush it off.*
"Hush now. I'm not trying to tell you how you should feel." *He assured her hastily.*
"I merely..." *He shook his head as if trying to get a fog to lift.*
"I don't know..." *His brow furrowed and his hand lifted to rub his temple gently. He was losing it again. But things were good. So good. Why was this happening?*

"Let's go," Shadi said uneasily. "Let's get out of here. We'll just go... be. Us."

"Yes." *Rochester looked back to her, a little too eager. A bit exasperated, but he still offered a soft smile.*
"That would be just the thing."
*He wrapped his arm around her, pulling her close as the hooves clattered on the cobblestones leading away from Nadir's townhouse.*

Shadi burrowed happily into his side, wishing she could just make things better with a hand wave or a kiss or something. She couldn't, and she knew it, but she didn't like being at a loss.
"We don't need to get pastries," she said at length. "If you don't want. If you'd rather... just be alone."
She meant either with her or truly alone, because she just didn't know what to do. How to help.

(( )) *The thought pulled at him, fighting against the delicate cracks in his psyche. They could go back and be alone, but...wouldn't that just make it harder not to be intimate? He wasn't ready. He just couldn't be. And he insisted to himself that it wasn't because of that image burned into his mind of her in Valmont's bed.* "No, no, darling." *He comforted with a more confident smile.* "I dare say some chocolate would do both of us a world of good." *And when he talked like that, even he almost believed it.*
